This and that.
I have a user who bought an old laptop from us. When I was away, it was given to her before I had the chance to clean it.

She took it upon herself, and the first thing she did was to detach it from my network, using the Network Identifiaction Wizard thing. She then renamed the pc to "latituded600".

Now, when you fire it up, it asks for username and password, and has no 'domain' options available. No combination of usernames and passwords works.

How the heck do we get into the pc?

TIA

PJ

Reinstall windows - you wouldn't want her to have a copy of your companies licensed software.....

That's not an issue.

How do I get into the pc?

If it was XP did you make a password reset disk?

or logon as administrator and change her login??? possibly in safemode

Do you want to recover data or something? Use a bootdisk to get hard drive access at a DOS prompt - or boot with the windows installation disk and it will give you similar options.

Do you set up a local user as part of your company's standard install?

There is a very easy way to do this. I'll PM you as its not something to be broadcast generally.

Blimey! That's a lot of questions.

1. No, there is no password reset disk.
2. I can't logon as admin, cos it won't accept the username/password
3. No, I don't want to recoever data, I want to delete company data (which is already duplicated on her new laptop) in order that she can then use this one for her own personal ends.
4. Yes, there was a local user, but it won't accept any passowrds or usernames.

Alfie. Help!

Thanks guys.

Just follow my PM or option 2 of sp!ke's post and you'll sort it easily and for free.

I believe this is quite difficult to do 'properly' (so it can't be recovered in a matter of minutes)?

I think this and the issue of not (legally) being able to re-sell licensed software (Windows etc.) on a 2nd hand PC is why most companies will no longer sell equipment to staff, or even give it away to charities/schools/etc.

I don't need to do it 'properly' as there's nothing on there that's in any way sensitive.

I don't have a licensing issue, and can happily sell this pc to this user.

I was quite happy doing this (and indeed I have done it six other times), until some muppet decided to try to do something they have no idea how to do, and then dropped the bits in my lap to fix(!)

Can anybody point me to some .iso recording software that works in XP SP2?

I use Alcohol 120% on mine. Faultless and so easy to use.

In the end, nothing worked.

Alcohol 120% seemed Ok, but wouldn't accept that the CD's I was trying to write to were empty. Even though they were brand new.

Fortunately, problem went away, as it turned out she'd already set up a new username, removed the old one, and then forgotten. Admin password had changed too. I dunno why, she claims it wasn't her. However, it had been changed to match her old password, so methinks she must have had a hand in it.....

Couldn't log on, as using wrong username.

Sorry to have troubled you all.

Where can I buy a f***ing big stick?

lol... POBCACH

Problem Occurred Between Keyboard and Chair

Probably Num lock left on which on a laptop can screw your password.
