Checked my online banking yesterday and noticed two pending payments to Asda for fuel. One for £99 and one for £16.

I was initially concerned that my card had been cloned.

Seems Asda has introduced a £99 pending payment for pay at the pump. They certainly don’t appear to have publicised this new policy.

I’ll be keeping an eye on this transaction to make sure the £99 is not debited when the transaction clears.

They used to make a £1 pending payment.

Common practice in Europe for years. I had a shock years ago when I filled up a hire car at an unmanned station near airport in France (about Euro 9.00 worth) only to see 100 Euro taken off my card when I got home . Pooped myself , but a day or so later it righted itself to Euro 9.00.

In fact I filled up a rental car in Sicily just a few days ago before returning it and the pump took Euro 101.00 which became Euro 40.28 by the time I got on the plane.

This was a new one on me. When it's unexpected it’s an unwelcome surprise.

Hopefully it will sort itself out early next week.

Had the very same thing happen last night at Asda fuel, came up as a notification on my wife’s phone that we had a £99 transaction and then the £50 of fuel that we actually did withdraw from the pump. Checked bank account but all is fine. Like you, I thought my card had been cloned and someone had fraudulently got £99 worth of fuel at my expense, phew!

I understand the concept of making a pending payment before you fill up, so there's no danger of you driving off without having enough money in your card's account to cover the cost. On trips to the USA I have had to prepay at the counter as the card machines at the pumps wouldn't talk to my card directly, which was a hassle.

But if they're going to do that then £99 is a bit on the low side these days - with prices stubbornly beyond £1.50/litre and an 80-litre tank I could easily exceed £100 in a single fill, sadly.

It’s totally normal for a pre-authorisations to show at pay @ pumps, it’s usually £1 or £99… I’m surprised you’ve not seen this before. It will drop off within a few days.

You can only fill up-to £99 per transaction - annoying for those of us with 80L tanks.

Never had that problem , Porker regularly gets £150+ fill ups of V Power , in one go.

Shell doesn't have that style of pay at pump though? Where you put your card in etc... don't you use the Shell Go app?

Perfectly normal. They can't know how much you're planning on putting in so they pre authorize a certain amount (usually based on a fill up). They'll use the token against the payment or it drops off in a couple of days.

It's not your money and they have not charged that amount, they're just getting authorization for a pending payment.

Wouldn`t know about P@P , anytime i have tried it with other cars in the household the "receipt" facility never works and as i like to keep my last fill-up receipt i need to go into the garage to get one.

Dont bother with the app as invariably when i get to the paypoint the app will have signed me out for some strange reason and i will have forgotten my password . again , just like what happens in Tesco / Morrisons etc.

Well I was referring to pay at pump transactions being limited to £99/transaction not cashier ones 😉

Most pumps have a maximum amount of £99 set so you cannot take more fuel than this unless you chose to pay at the counter.

Well my local ASDA filling station is unmanned ,the odd time I have used it,it puts up a £1 pre fill up amount and a £99 limit,as already mentioned when we had £1.50 a litre before you needed to fill up with at least a quarter of a tank or risk hitting the £99 limit,so the owners of ASDA have changed that to £99 pre fill up ,I suppose given that the two guys who own it were and are still in the fuel business they would look at that side of ASDA to make changes.

Why not just put it through as 2x transactions?

As said this isn't new and has been widely discussed and criticised on most media.

It’s new to me and another poster on this thread has been caught by it. So it's a fair bet plenty of others are unaware.

I don't like it. While they are holding this £99 it is not available to spend from my account. I suppose there are situations where a person could stray into their overdraft if they were unaware there was a hold on their account.

And that's the reason for the level of debate on media for at least the last 6 months. There's also the issue that you only want to put £20 of fuel in your car but it won't authorise because you don't have £99 in your account. Although to be fair all of the arguments can be settled by actually going to the till to pay rather than doing it at the pump, I have to do that anyway at my local garage as they don't have pay at the pump. So you either accept the cost of the convenience or spend a few minutes in a queue.

The till is where the KitKats are which is another bonus.

I am sure many people are totally unaware of it and those are the ones likely to be pushed 'into the red' when putting £10 in the tank just before payday. For example knowing they only have £30 in the bank until they get paid the next day.
