PC won't "sleep" first time

Put my PC to sleep and it dutifully goes into sleep mode after a minute or so then promptly restarts.

Have to do it 3 or 4 times before it finally sleeps.

I suspect a programme may be slow in closing, but any idea which one please?

IE, Office, etc. are all closed.

Many thanks

without indepth knowledge of your system, or even basic as we dont have a clue what windows/cpu/motherboard configuration you have, I would hazard a guess that it could be a USB device, mouse / kb etc that is enabled to wake the computer up.

Go to device manage and check the power options for each usb device and see if any are enabled for waking up the PC

Thanks for the fast reply!

Windows 7 Home Premium (x64) Service Pack 1 (build 7601)

2.93 gigahertz Intel Core2 Duo
64 kilobyte primary memory cache
3072 kilobyte secondary memory cache
64-bit ready
Multi-core (2 total)
Board: Sony Corporation VAIO
Bus Clock: 267 megahertz
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. R2040T5 05/14/2010

The only active USB device at present is a WD hard drive I use as a backup.
The printer is off as is the scanner

did you look at that?

I think I had something similar on my PC when it ran Fister around 6 years ago.

I had to change the power settings to disable what was causing it (which I forget now but could have been a USB one as Mark suggested).

Type cmd in search box or in start run menu.

In command prompt box type:
powercfg -lastwake

That should give an idea on what woke it up.

What is plugged in to your USB ports on the back of the PC?

AHA! Bingo.

It's the USB mouse - I have disabled the "wake up"

Thanks all - your help is much appreciated.
