PDA (xda2?) help

OOh, and also, how powerfull are the speakers on the XDA2? (or does it connect to the cars speakers for the GPS instructions?)

Are you using a wired gps or bluetooth? I ask because I wonder how usefull this is as a phone when driving (handsfree BT needed) and running satnav at the same time. Or do you just not worry about calls when using it for satnav?

I use the wired gps receiver as I can move it from one vehicle to another ..blue tooth can drop its connection or suffer battery failure so just took that idea out of the loop. like waiting for a connection for gps and blue tooth would do my head in.if I'm using tom tom and the phone rings the phone screen appears and allows me to take the call while giving me directions as well, or you can mute the directions and just take the call on speaker phone, the screen is clear enough to see and give good visual directions...the speaker phone is very good and I usually turn it down because its just a bit to loud...and what i payed for it its brill...i'v just got the Origin B2 so i may splice the gps cable and have both hooked up to that ...thier is a cable supplied by origin at extra cost but i'll have to do some more research

Sorry, I know I'm digging up dinosaurs here, but I felt it was better than starting a new thread...
I was having second thoughts about the hw6500; and qutie frankly about any palm pilot with an integrated thumb board. The reason I say this is that I went into dixons to do some window shopping and tried typing on the thumb board. I'm not particularly chubby, but I must admit, I hated it. I think I will go with an external full sized folding keyboard for when I need to type.

So I ask you again, does anyone have advice on something similar to this:
- Mobile phone
- Gps (preferrably integrated)
- Palm pilot with WiFi capability, (and obviously POP3 email reception through the wifi connection, html browser should be standard with a WiFi connection..... or so I hope)
- NO thumb-board

The i-mate JAM seems pretty good, Mambo, did you end up getting it? How is it?
Does anyone have the Dell Axim X50v? I've heard rave reviews on its behalf...
Thanks again,
Michele

Nope didn't get it, think I will wait for something decent to come out.

I did however get myself a Nokia 6020 (£90 off line) which seems to work with a 3 sim. Ssshhhh don't tell anyone ;)

Finally a phone that works on three that isn't the size of a brick! I only have normal calling and texting but thats all I need :D Got about 6 months to run on my contract and then I'll probably move over to another network so I can get a decent phone!

Slightly off topic I know............

I'm waiting for the HP Ipaq Mobile Messenger (see previous posts) 6515.....due end of this month, direct form HP....

OK, although I wish I could wait until the end of the month, I can't... dang. So this is my shortlist:
- Motorola A100
- PalmOne LifeDrive
- Siemens SX66
- HP IPAQ 6365/h6315
- Dell Axim X50v (but doesn't have a cellphone built in)
- iMate JAM
- HP iPaq hx4700 (but doesn't have a cellphone built in)
From my list, you might notice I'm not a fan of the palmOS, and Ive even looked at a Symbian phone or two. I realised the DEll has no phone capabilities either... grumble My point is, does anyone have any ideas on the above? Anyone heard something from a friend about how bad one is or things like that? Thanks again,
Spinal

I have an XDA2, which is a good mobile, but has been a little bit temperamental over the last few months (freezing up, not powering up.. etc). Another annoying thing is the fact that it is a little too big in size. If you intend to carry it in your pocket, then you will find it gets very annoying very quickly.

I was actually looking at the spec of a iMate Jam last night... and i think the most impressive thing is the camera function. Great, if you like to take pictures.

For sheer upgradeability, i prefer the PPC platform as there is an untold amount of software out there to make the basic spec better.

If you were considering the XDA2, the newer version (XDA 2i??) i am told has a better OS. So perhaps they have ironed out some of the issues they had with the XDA2.

From the reviews i've seen online, the iMate Jam is a good piece of kit.. and if it does what the XDA does but in a smaller casing... them i'm inclined to switch over.

Yeah, I kind of ruled out the XDA based on its size. I found very little info on the SX66, but from what I see, its what I'm inclined to buy. I'm guessing its released only in the US so I will need to get it shipped over, but that shouldn't be a worry. Thanks for the info on the XDAII; I'll have to look at the new version, I haven't heard of it.
Michele

ok.. i've just had a check on Expansys .. and it seems like we are talking about the same products.

The SX66 is actually what O2 badge as teh XDA IIs. You will probably find the spec is exactly the same. Its just that O2 prefer to call it their XDA range and others, something else.

Hope that hasn't confused you.

LOL!!!

At a second glace, they do have a striking similarity! :P

Thats qutie funny, I've cracked my head looking for someone willing to sell an unlocked SX66 (paypal payment) and well... well... i feel dumb :P

Have a nana! :bannana:

Thanks! The XDA IIs it is then!

Michele

ok.. you owe me another nana :D because...

the SX66 which is the same as the XDA IIs is also the same as ... the i-mate PDA2K!!

Like i said.. same phone, different badges :)

I have had an XDAIIi since Xmas and it is going back to 02!!

IMHO the XDA had many flaws, don't get me wrong as a PDA it works well but coupled with a phone it does not work well at all.

Problems (I have had 3 now 1x XDAIIs and 2x XDAIIi's) lock up's requiring restarts all the time, slow OS, dropped calls, battery needs to be on constant charge, bluetooth car kit problems, wireless problems, sync problems....need I go on??

02 support (bussiness customer) are s*** and even say the phones are crap!

Waiting for 02 to replace the phone with another windows based device ASAP!

Save your money and go for an Orange SPV, unlock it and you have a phone that will do most of what the XDA's do and do it well!!

I looked at the SPV C500, and decided that I didn't like it. The screen seems way too small for my tastes (hey, as I'm gonna be running windows in some form, why not use the screen to watch the odd divX movie?) Also, most SPV's don't have a touch screen, which IMHO should be a legal requirement for any PDA. If by SPV you meant the M2000, thats the same as the XDA IIs, the SX66 and now the i-mate PDA2K too. LOL! When you say slow OS, what do you mean by that?

Oh and Madferrit, heres another nana :bannana:
Michele

EDIT: I found a comparison here for the XDA range. The IIi seems better than the IIs, smaller battery, longer battery life, lighter, better camera, and everything else practically the same. The price for the two is identical though, so why would anyone choose the IIs over the IIi? Am I missing something?

If you are that interested in the IIi I will sell you mine when I get the replacement!!

Really? Quick question, I just had a doubt, does yours run on windows mobile 2003, first edition or second edition? Anyways, if you are selling roughly at the end of this month, I'm interested...

All XDAIIi's run on 2003 SE and is better than previous editions.

As for watching movies good luck!! you will need a charger with you at all times!!

I will let you know when the replacement comes through.

Well, my vacations have come and gone; as have my phones. While on holiday, I did the really smart thing and I left my trusty old mobile in my pocket before going rafting...

So now that I came back, first thing (well second, after practically buying a new computer) was to buy a new phone. I managed to get my hands on a XDA IIi. You were right about the batttery, but I asked for it :P That said, I now have a charger in every car, a charger at home and one at uni; so I feel pretty .... confident (or charged? :P)

My question now, I'm trying to connect to my WiFi lan at home, but am experiencing some troubles... does anyone know of a simple walkthrough/howto on the net? I'm waiting for the O2 upgrade to finish downloading; then I'll try again...
Michele

--EDIT--
Well, that update seems to have done something.... now the router "sees" the xda and the xda connects to the network (or so it would seem); but when I goto IE I get "Unable to connect; You have no modem entries created, and no network card present"

Any idea what that means?

---EDIT---
Ok, I've gotten it working. Aparently it was something to do with the WEP encryption protocols; I think I've ironed everything out!

Glad to see you got it sorted!!

Its a bit of a pig to set up at first (make sure u back up your settings!!)

I am still awaiting a replacement from 02 the XDA2i has been sitting in my drawer at the office collecting dust for the last 3 months!!

I now have a SPV, unlocked on 02 (purchased via ebay) and it does everything the XDA should do!!

I have just got rid of my 2month old XDA2i (new one with wifi and megapixel camera), after 4 replacements, I have gone back to a unlocked C500 and mitac mio 168.

All the o2 xda and other rebadged versions of HTC smartphones ( appart from c500) seem to be terribly unreliable. my xda2i's all had a habit of eating sd card.. Another point to concider is they are ok pda's but awfull phones..

One important car related point is they (with the exception of the xda2i) all use the appauling microsoft bluetooth stack that can not handle two bluetooth devices as the same time... ie if the phone rings and you use bluetooth handsfree along with a bluetooth gps you wont be able to navigate while talking..

The XDA 2i uses the widcomm/broadcomm bluetooth stack and can handle two bluetooth devices.

I have got several bluetooth gps's and 2 wired gps's none improve the stability of the htc pda phones

But in the 2 months i have used my xda2i for navigation i have had to do a warm reset nearly every time the phone has been hung up.. I even tried using an imate pda2 rom on it and got same issues.. After talking to o2 they strangly offered me a full refund and i got out of the 12months contract...

My company have about 40 orange m1000 and m2000 and they constantly go wrong.. amasing to see them being us pda's along side normal phones..

i am all for convergence devices but i think my gps and phone will be staying seperate

Iain..
