I am experiencing petrol fumes in the boot of my 1977 W123 saloon and I was stopped this morning by a passer by claiming to see petrol leaking from the right hand side of the car (not the exhaust). When I opened the boot there was a strong smell of pertol but couldnt see any leaking on the ground. Any ideas? I was thinking about removing the tank to check for leaks, how difficult a job is this? Will I need a 2 post lift? I don't yet have a haynes manual!

shall i tell you what is probably happening? ok here goes..

Put car up on ramps, you will have a leak at the rubber pipe that comes out of the tank... the reason you are not seeing it is because the fuel is evaporating on your hot exhaust...

I had a problem whereby my car would lose power and thought it was the fuel pump... spent £50 on that, filled up tank to find it all gone the next day and a big hole in my new tarmac where id parked..

Anyway, when the exhaust is cool you will see the drips...

Its only very cheap to replace but only available from MB..

Thank you for the advice, me and my Dad are going to get it on our friendly mechanics ramp to take a peek! We'll let you know how it goes.

There is always a blackish damp patch around the area of the leak
