Pics of my E Class Estate

Actually I've got 16" and 17" (though not at the same time :o)

I've got winter tyres on 16" Ruchas, and normal tyres on 17" 5 twin spokes (See my gallery). Yes the 17" are slightly rougher, but I'm not sure how much of this is down to the harder compound compared to the winter tyres.

My 17" tyres are almost due for replacement, so if I do go up to 18", now's the time to do it!

Update,

1) Yes the silver pic of my dads car are 16" I checked and agree 17" would be a good compromise.

2) He does like his chrome GB badge but then his car has probably done half its 100K miles in Europe...

PS he still has that one on the SL !!!! aarrgghhh

I went from 15" to 17" CLS wheels on my 210.

No real difference in ride quality, but much better handling.

And the car looks far better.

Leave it on 16's. Looks fine and gives good ride and handling is fine on these wheels.
For handling and road holding on the highways and bye ways of our public roads then 16" are the way to go.

Beauty will always be in the eyes of the beholder so go with what you personally prefer

Needs dropping an inch or so badly! + a Clean :)

dropping would make it gangster, now it's just slightly gangly :)

it had its first eastern european car wash clean last week in 10 months! it's sparkling now

Funnily enough, my wife likes the wheels as they are and keeps asking why I want to change them! Some angles I think the 16s look ok, but side on view, from a distance, I definately think they look a bit too small! Maybe I'll wait 'till the tryes need changing and then see what I feel! :)

I scoured the country to get 16 inch wheels. Look much better IMO (unless you like the 19-year-old-in-a-Nova look) and give so much a better ride than 17's.

The way this silly fashion is going we shall soon have solid wheels and no tyres at all!:)

I was going to suggest you wit until the tyres need replacing :)

I fear though you might be in for a hard time if you do change :)

The ride might be noticeably 'different' :D:) and if your wife then comments on this awful change :) Who is going to get the ear bashing?

I think 17's will look better, but you may well comprmise the ride quality....could you borrow some 17's for a while to see how it feels?

I'm with Mudster on the AMG's however....imho they do look better.

Just my tuppence worth.

If my Saab's 17s fit the E, then I could try to see! The tyres are the same at 245/40s so the ride would be exactly the same I guess!

Well, fortunately, she doesn't mind too much if I change them - she just doesn't see the need when they have good tyres on! Practical minded woman eh! :D

I've always been a fan of sticking to the basic setup for tyres, 16s on mine, I wouldn't go above 17 for road use on an E.

Look at the tales of woe from people with pothole damaged cracked / bent alloys, nearly all larger sizes due to the smaller sidewall and stiffness of the lower profile tyre. Trackday use is a different story, but we're talking british roads here!

I don't *think* that GB badge is legal......................? I'm pretty sure you either need a GB badge on your number plate, or a 'standard' one (on a white oval).

Anyone know?

I agree with you. Leave the big wheels to 19 year olds in Novas. They all have them. A Mercedes should look like a Mercedes. I scoured the country to get my E estate with 16 inch wheels. Tried it on 17's but with all the ridges and potholes it is a shame to spoil the legendary MB ride.

Plus apart from giving a worse ride, bigger wheels also give worse fuel consumption, poorer handling in the wet, more chance of aquaplaning, higher C02 emmissions and less feel on the steering. And they get curbed much more easily. Probably the most stupid car fashion ever.

But this is because of the width & depth, not the diameter. Whilst I know generally large dia wheels tend to be wider, if one could get some large but narrow width tyres, then there would be none of the performance/safety downsides (although they may not appear as aesthetic!)
