My Pirelli P6000s were basically bald and I needed some new tyres in order to pass the MOT. I really want some bigger rims but I've not decided which yet and once again the thought of buying some winter tyres for the wheels went through my head. Enough threats, I finally bought some!

Having read a load of reviews I decided on some Pirelli Winter 240 SnowSport tyres, 205/55/16 with a V-rating. I bought them from www.mytyres.co.uk. When ordering I was given the option of having them delivered to a tyre fitter, well it's not like I can fit tyres myself so that made sense. I opted to have them delivered to "Paul Neal Car Body Repairs", about 5 minutes from where I work in South Yorkshire. I was told they would take about a week to be delivered.

A week goes by and I hear nothing. I rang Paul Neal Body Repairs and spoke to Paul Neal himself, he was very pleased to speak to me because it turned out he has no tyre fitting or wheel balancing equipment and a truck had turned up a few days earlier to drop off 4 tyres he knew nothing about! He said he kept checking his bank and creditcard statements in case someone had tried to charge him for them! I told him I ordered them through mytyres and he said they had incorrectly listed him, although he is due to have some tyre fitting and wheel balancing equipment installed it's not due for a few months!

I took the tyres to a workshop recommended by Paul Neal, about 2 minutes from his bodyshop.

It took them about half an hour or so to fit the tyres and balance the wheels.

The tyres came to £387.20 inclusive of shipping, fitting was £38 including the weights, balancing and disposal of the old tyres. That's a total of £425.20, or £106.30 per tyre inclusive of everything.

The tyres seem to grip extremely well and I have only been able to get the ASR light to flash once since fitting them about a week ago, compared to every junction with the P6000s  . They have the internationally recognised snowflake/mountain logo on them and are one down from studded tyres. They seem to make more noise than I'm used to but that's only to be expected.

From what I have read they should perform very well in snowy and icy conditions (a few flakes fell this morning and we're due ice over the next couple of days!) so I am glad they have been fitted. I still intend to swap to some bigger wheels in the next couple of months and then these wheels with tyres will go into storage. From what I have read they should last me for 4 winters or so.

Actual snow/ice performance is yet to be tested, I will update with results, but I'm sure they will easily be better than the P6000s I am used to! :)

The tyres work superbly in about an inch of crusty snow, no traction problems at all, not a flicker of ASR all the way to work over the pennines, and I gunned it a couple of times on the straight bits to see if they'd break away - nothing.

More snow needed to fully test!

Brilliant news, will you be keeping the tyres on throughout the summer, or will you get wider wheels and tyres for summer use?

Will get some larger diameter/width wheels with all-season tyres in a few weeks, then put the winter wheels into storage until next November/December.

Performance in thick snow is pretty good! Didn't get chance to test much but I drove through the virgin snow in the carpark at work and it was a lot better than I expected! :)

cool - nice one Nick :bannana: Looks like you'll have some opportunities to test them on your way home as well

I just impressed no-one at work with some doughnuts in the fresh carpark snow ;)

Hardly anyone is in so the carpark is empty :)

Did the snow wash the sugar off? ;)

Driving in W mode in a few inches of snow, half gas-pedal travel and there is no loss of traction at all! Braking is also excellent, not had any kind of attempt from ABS to help me to stop so far.

Now takes hills without issues!

Only problem is all the other drivers with all-seasons on! :(

Got 2 Nokian WR 195/65 HR 15 on the rear. Very good in snow! Also bought from www.mytyres.co.uk As far as I know this is the only source of NOKIAN winter tyres in the UK but correct me if I'm wrong. I also have found VREDESTEIN wintracs to be a good allyear /winter tyre.

I've got a set of 4, Nokian WR's on my 190 and they are excellent snow tyres, as I have not manage to get the tail out this winter.

Winter tyres are not only for the snow but they also work better in the cold, as the rubber is a lot softer.

You should probably have 4 winter tyres and they should probably be V or W rated on your car. I guess they're still better than running on all-season or summer tyres though!

From what I read, most "normal" tyres are only rated down to 7°c, below that they become hard and don't grip properly. Winter tyres are a different compound and still have elasticity in much colder temperatures.

When I had the tyres fitted the bloke chuckled and said something about "bit late for these isn't it? Winter is nearly over!"

I've just worked out that its Shude's fault it is so cold and keeps snowing, as he asked, no demanded icy weather to test out his new purchase!!

Damn thee!

;)

Good to hear they are working well.

I'm loving snow driving now! Pity it's probably over by this weekend :(

Explains my ever so frequent orange glow from the speedo (ASR light).

:D :D  I would say the probable cause of this glow is lower down at 'floor level' and slightly over to the right. :)

Take care,
John
