Ad the car up on the jack today swapping the front tyres. Seems to be a lot of play in the wheel. I have also noticed a slight knock when hitting bumps.

Do you mean the wheel has play relative to the hub, or the whole hub has play in it relative to the steering and suspension?

Looks like the wheel has play to the hub. Going to have another look the weekend

if it were me I wouldn't drive it until i found out what it is - life is short enough and even shorter for an "old un" like me who is well into the nourishment phase of life with the punishment part being a distant memory!

Try and get a helper to assist you, it will make finding the problem a lot easier.

Firstly, get you helper to put a foot on the brake hard while you check for play. If the play is no longer there, its in the wheel bearing.

If not get you helper to move the wheel while you go under the well supported vehicle for a look. Stay safe!!!

James. Will the engine need to be running for the sbc system to operate ??

If it is the bearing, can I just tighten them up ???

As long as no damage has been done to the carriers.
You can feel it once the bearing has been tightened up correctly by turning the hub by hand. Any damage to the running faces will be felt as a series of notches as the hub revolves.
You will lose nothing by tightening them up and any damage will show itself as a rumble whilst driving.
