Hi guys, meant to be getting my car off to a mechanic tonight but been having such a problem today.

My car is a 1997 w202 c250TD.

My key (it's one with three buttons) think it's IR and RF might be wrong.

It unlocks the car/locks the car/opens the boot all with the buttons.

When I put it in the ignition I no longer hear that electronic "click" that it used to and I can't turn the ignition. Just absolutely nothing. I have no idea what to do. I can't get the car even out of park so I can't move it.

Things I've tried.

Charge car battery
Change batteries in key
Check IR working with digital camera.

Can someone please tell me what I can try?

Thanks alot.

Try the spare key first.

Change the key batteries and make sure that the cars battery id fully charged.

If all the above is good then it will probably be an ignition switch fault. If all the above is ok the car will need to be plugged in to a Star diag machine to see what is going on.

Thanks olly,

No spare key I'm afraid :(

And not too much cash at the moment I'm afraid :( dealer visit is off the cards.

ya im afraid it sounds like the EIS

you have tryed all the options that we would tell you too do

star test next is all i can say also

If you only have one key, order a new key first ( approx 235 quid ) if that does not cure it then the EIS will probably be faulty. But you should have two keys anyway.

As Olly says, if new key does not fix the fault it will have to go onto the Star machine for a key and EIS test :thumb:

You don't have to go to a dealer to get it tested.

Budget £500-600 for a new switch fitted and you may have to get a new key too and it £227+vat.

Good luck.

Emm the car cost me £500 mate.
I dont earn enough to pay that kind of money :(
I'm absolutely gutted to be honest, going to have to scrap an otherwise perfect car.

You should open the key fob and remove the PCB and closely inspect it for possible loose components, particularly up the narrow end where it goes into the ignition switch.

Be careful that no small parts fall out of the key fob when you open it.
Was the key dropped very recently?

if you open the phob

look for any broken bits and if its really dirty with dust
if you have a alcohol based spray for electrical connections i would spray it and was out the key phob it will evaporate after a few min and put new batterys in and check again

i would also check the connection at back of EIS were keys goes in make sure its secure but do not remove

i would also disconnect battery and reconnect it

i also would leave the key in position 2 for a while ie; an hour and maybe it will reset the key to EIS I HAVE HEAR THIS BEFORE

and last but not least a new EIS OR ONE FROM BREAKERS WITH A KEY but it will have to be reprogramed to your car

good luck

You can't re-program a second hand EIS. It is new only if it is faulty.

Cleaning the key is a great idea. Before you throw the car away get it diagnosed firstly at your nearest independednt MB specialist.

ignition switch costs that much....?

I had this go bad on my E39 and it cost £39 from the dealer and I even fit it my self thats how easy it was... It doesn't sound like an EIS problem because the ignition barrel just isn't registering the fact you've put the key in going by what you've described.

Doesn't the key come out of the key fob?

There is much much more to an EIS than you may think. Hence the price.

Generally speaking if the key unlocks the car and locks it too then it is probably ok (DAS3 type key) If the electric steering lock does not release when the key is inserted then 99%of the time the ignition switch is at fault.

if you do need a spare key, use a small key cutting place. i got a spare key for £45, better than paying £200+. does the job.

Hi there, I dropped my key on laminated floor today. drop was only 2ft. When I went to open the the door via remote it wouldn't work. The lights flash ont he remote control but no responce from central locking :(

I managed to manually open the door using the push key & the remote was ok to start the engine so I managed to get home ok.
It's this key. I have a spare remote but can't find it unfortunately :(

Is there anyway to repair the key?

Thanks in advance

I dropped my 1996 W202 Remote Key about 3 feet onto a tiled floor. It ceased to function correctly and wouldn't unlock my car. There is a test function when you press the unlock button, the infra-red light on the key should illuminate after about one second elapsed. My broken key illuminated immediately I pressed the unlock button...rats!

I pulled it apart and found the "button bit" had broken off. After research I found the site below. I had my son-in-law do the micro soldering as my eyes and expertise are not that good. He took about 5 minutes. The key is absolutely perfect once again.
