Please stop me from buying this...

They are old 1960's kit but were used in Iraq and are still in use in Afghanistan due to lack of sufficient Warriors.

They've had reactive armour fitted to counter the threat from RPG's and a top turret for a machine gun but are still out there plying their trade with the British Army after all these years.

Scott - I knew they were used in Iraq 1 because I was in a 434 the recovery equivalent for that stunning little episode. I wasn't aware they were still being used, it must only be for the very rear echelons as they are with or without reactive armour a slow cumbersome outdated lump of junk! IMHO:)
We had a 50cal machine gun on a hydraulic mount on the top of ours. when you fired it with the rear spades down it still went backwards! Good fun though.
It was damn slow when I was in so with reactive armour increasing it's weight I wouldn't have thought you needed an RPG to hit it. You could virtually walk up behind it and stick Semtex on it's ar*e:D

I believe that speed and general performance has now been improved by fitting a new generation of diesel engines. Air con has also been fitted due to cope with the heat in the Iraq and Afghan theatres.

These old buses were due to be retired years ago and yet the Army still can't do without them !

I must profess my ignorance... just what is reactive armour? (and will it fit my W202? :p)

Extra armour plates that are bolted onto the standard plate. They have an explosive compound inside so that when they are hit with force (RPG for example) they explode out 'react to the impact', and away and blow the initial impact away from the plate and the vehicle/people behind it.

I've not served in the military and only know this from Discovery channel, so this really is the dumbed down laypersons explanation!

In basic terms reactive armour dissipates the explosive force of a projectile hitting it. It's designed to stop tanks being blown up when taking a direct hit. Someone else on here may be able to explain it more that's about the sum of my knowledge. As for fitting it to your W202 it costs a hell of a lot and not much point unless you intend driving to Helmand province, painting your car with a Union Jack and shouting "Osama Bin Laden is a dead man if I find him!" I.E. if you need protection from RPG's and other high velocity projectiles. (This doesn't include objects thrown by the wife in an argument)

I did serve and thats a better explanation than mine:wallbash:. Perhaps I should have refreshed before posting.

I was just kidding about it fitting the W202 :p

I'm driving through a region that according to the FCO is on par with Helmand... but in a W202 that's had 3 accidents, a blown radiator and winter tyres :p
