or a vital piece of administration?

British motorists driving outside the UK must now remove old-style GB stickers or cover them up.
Instead they should display a UK sticker or have the UK identifier on their number plate.
The UK government guidance has been in place since Tuesday 28 September.
"It might only be a matter of replacing two letters, but this is a significant change for drivers who in normal times take their cars outside the UK," said RAC spokesman Rod Dennis.
The new rules state that any driver with a GB sticker on their car now needs to replace it with a new UK one if they are taking their vehicle abroad.
"Drivers also need to remember that number plates featuring the blue band and letters 'GB' next to the European golden stars are also no longer valid," Mr Dennis warned.

..........

A Department for Transport spokesperson said: "Changing the national identifier from GB to UK symbolises our unity as a nation and is part of a wider move towards using the UK signifier across government.

It's good to know they've got that far down their 'things to do' list.

Yep - aparently the Northern Irish were feeling left out!

he heh, so they can easily find time to impose brand new, time-wasting and money-wasting regulations and red tape on us, but recruit 5000 new hgv drivers and 5000 farm workers from abroad after kicking 20k plus out a year ago they put in the too-hard box?

Couldn’t organise a party in a brewery😅

No one was "kicked out"

Any EU citizen living in the UK that met the criteria had the right to apply for settled back status.

We agree then, because the people that didn’t meet Patel’s earnings or length of stay criteria - such as carers on low pay, or people on low pay who moved to and from the EU regularly, like farm workers and hgv drivers, we’re kicked out because they didn’t have settlement rights…..

Pointless bureaucracy----wait till we abandon the metric system!!!!!--:wallbash:
Brexit: Imperial units only part of laws revamp, says No 10
Are imperial units going to help the Tories hide huge cost increases?
More to the point-any system of measurement in general use facilitates/habituates the consumer with an intrinsic sense of what your money buys you by volume or weight ---any change diminishes this ability to calculate this sense of "value for money". If experience of the previous change from imperial to metric measurement is anything to go by it invariably hides a unitary price increase in any commodity on sale

PS this topic should be in the politics section

I think those stories are media muck stirring at it's worst. The Independent should be particularly ashamed but then it's some time since they justified their title.

I 'd like to bet the real story is that the EU law banning imperial units, just one amongst a whole lot of other EU laws, is being withdrawn and why not, we are no longer a member of the EU but that the government has no real intention of the UK reverting to imperial units.

There may be some advantages, although if honest I don't see many.

Price per gallon. But us seeing a rise from £5.77 to £6.45 since April would cause a fair bit of wtf. So would Shell and the like want to?

Agree. Tories hide price increases as the rationale here? Clutching at straws surely?

I think it's hilarious how we've had pint cans of beer and 1 lb jars of jam. Oh no, sorry, they're labelled 568ml and 454g because we can't legally call them pint and pound. Absurd!

Obviously the metric system makes much sense, but it's the principle of being dictated to that many hate. I suspect we'll continue to measure our height and weight in imperial units for many years to come in this country.

I think the whole thread has political undertones?! 😉

How were 20,000 "kicked out," when the UK has given UK settled status to nearly six million EU refugees?

Millions ran back to their home country during covid19. Thousands transferred into much easier and better paid Covid19 related jobs with "Brexit." It's hard to justify staying doing HGV when there's been a massive growth in local delivery work.

And it was only BP that had a driver shortage, until the Tabloids set fire to consumer demand and got us all to rush to the petrol stations and Remain started crowing.

There are many reasons to be in the EU: open borders, leadership of the EU army etc. But stealing HGV drivers from Poland, ( twice the HGV shortage (126,000), and Germany (60,000 HGV driver shortage) isn't a tangible benefit.

You can try to explain it to him but on past experience you will be fighting a losing battle.

I would make sure you remove the GB stickers if driving abroad, the reputation of the authorities in some countries, they would drive you to a cash point to pay their fine in cash for displaying the wrong sticker.
100 euros cash sir, straight into their back pocket. Especially now they are so bitter towards the UK...

Don't give them an excuse to pull you over... it will only cost you.....
Play by the rules and you have a fighting chance..

The UK has never really shaken off the imperial system, to close ties to the USA and an aging generation who prefer it.
Why do we still drive in miles per hour and not KM?

Its what we are used to. Best of both worlds IMO.. and a trivial matter not worth discussing... just enjoy and enjoy you Pint!!

Although the US volumetric units are a little different, of course...
