poor fuel economy on E320 CDI

Ive had my 55plate e320 cdi sport for just over a year now, i have done a sorry 7k miles. When i bought the car i reset the readings, today i am showing an average of 27mpg. Before the service it was showing as 22mpg.

I have a very heavy right foot mixed with a lot of stop start inner city driving does me no good.

On the other hand when i just cruise and never throttle it i still never get over 28mp, do you recon there is something possibly wrong.

Car has been run in well 116k on the clock now.

Thanks
Nad

That sounds remarkably low - how many miles you getting from a tankfull? 27 mpg is 470 miles to 80 litres.

Check your tyre pressures, and if you can have the MAF and thermostat checked - that all worked well for me!

Has Rocus changed his thermostat. I just changed my thermosat( see my other posting) yesterday. around town I used to get around 28mpg. on the motorway it reaces 48mpg. ( ie with the old 87degree stat and ITG foam air filter) I will do a run tommorrow and post my findings with the new thermostst. MZ have upgraded the original thermostat from 87 to 92. I have also replaced the coolant with the latest pink colour which last for 5 years . with the old stat it never goes above 60degrees around town and goes to just under 70degrees on motorways around 60mph. with the new stat you can see it quite quickly rising up to around 90 degrees. mind you i just had the car around last christmas . it could be the warm weather now and not the stat. so I will wait until I do the runs tommorrow. I have 2001 e320cdi w210 estate

27mpg sounds quite good for city driving. On the motorway if you go above 110mph regularly 28mpg is not so bad.

Try driving it gently, on the speed limits on sweeping A roads and on 70mph on motorway for a good 100 miles and it should be around 40mpg

yesterday when to coventry from enfield and back ie around 200miles total. I managed to get 52.7mpg and around 33mpg in town . very good improvement with new 92degrees stat . only got 48mpg or around 20ish around town with the old 87degrees stat. can't belive changing the stat can make such difference or could be just the warmer weather.

I have actually sold the car now, as it was costing over £108 per tank and the company reimbursed fuel rates didn't cover the increased costs in fuel so she relecutantly had to go. Thanks all for your comments though.

At some risk of turning this into another thread that will not die, thought I would chuck in the results of a somewhat epic drive back from Inverness yesterday

Those following traffic reports yesterday afternoon and who know what a horror the A9 can be when infested with heavy vehicles and caravans :wallbash: will understand it was "epic" for all the wrong reasons. Also noteworthy is the small fact that temperatures we encountered yesterday varied from 3.5C at the top of a bleak Highland pass to 23.5C on the M1.

So 2003 vintage EU3 E320cdi estate laden with two adults, one large dog, goods, trappings plus a rather large industrial floor polisher and subject to, erm, highly variable speeds to compensate for mobile road blocks plus crawling down sections of A road and motorway for a long while, turned in 43.1mpg over what in current UK terms at least were 590 miles of real world touring conditions.

(Note to Alex Salmond: The condition of the parts of the A9 is a national disgrace. Thank you)

Apparently when SNP took over they found that the previous Labour government had spent many years holding forums and discussion groups with all & sundry, promising that the A9 would be upgraded soon, without actually putting any plans in place or money aside to pay for it. Only time will tell if Alec Salmond keeps his promise.

But I agree, it is not fit for modern traffic, and has not been for many years, much like most other UK roads.

Parts are OK and work is being done but there are many, and some potentially lethal, potholes. Quite a bit of dodging required but in the really heavy rain that fell earlier in the week simply impossible to do.

The inside lane of the dual carriageway on the final bits up Inverness is just breaking up, to the point were going past heavy vehicles was rather like passing a gritter.

And WTF is with the mega roadworks around Glasgow? Is somebody trying to create gridlock?
