Poor tickover when warm

Hello all,

Only had my 1998 CLK 320 Benz for approx 1 Month..but already have a problem with it  I was wondering if anyone has experienced the same problem or has enough wisdom to help diagnose it?

When starting from cold it runs perfectly and very smoothly.

If I stop for a short period of time i.e 10 - 30 mins its still fine - but If I leave it approx 1 hour so its only just still warm, when started it ticks over very roughly almost stalling (most of the time it does stall - the engine does its best to try and stabilize the revs) but a few blips of the throttle will almost nearly always settle it down, and once I pull away its fine again!?

It recently (a week before I got it) had a new (and apparently notorious) MAS recently fitted, does the ECU need time to re-adjust?

I'm not sure when the plugs were last changed (the last 2 services were by an 'independant garage before I bought it) - so could it be a bad plug?

The local "Stealership" is wanting nigh on £60+ Vat to plug it into their diag machine!

Any usefull advice much appreciated....before I begrudgingly take it to a dealer..

Cheers

I would be more than happy to plug it into my Star for considerably less than a dealer.

Let me know.

Thanks - I don't think you are too far from me either, whats your labour rates?

Any preliminary ideas of what the cause may be? Do my assumptions of a bad plug seem feasible?

Regards
Dave

Actually just to clarify 'Rough tickover' - its seems to gently rock the car from side to side the revs rise and fall in time with this.

The symptoms are so similar to needing a MAS replaced. Mine did all that and a new MAS fixed it all. I wonder if the recently replaced MAS is actually new. And was the air filter also replaced in the same timespace?

Plugs need doing every 60k and my guess is that somebody has skipped getting them done as an MB dealer will charge you £300+ to get this job done

Thanks for the comments guys - I will check the MAS and see if I can see what make it is (I heard that it should be a Bosch or Pierburg?) - the old one was left for me in the car with plastic caps on it..it looks like these 'endcaps' came from the new one? which made me think that the new part was actually new.

Its just done 59k so just about time to change the plugs then.
