A good friend of mine has been issued with marching orders by his wife that they have to get a 7 seat car, and this coincides with his Honda Accord estate being close to numerous large items.

Not being a car nut, and having looked at the people carrier route with dread and having no interest in a 4x4 at all, he asked me for my thoughts on a later model W211. Economy being important, a post facelift 220 cdi is probably the route to go.

What issues should I advise him of, this being a car about which I know little. He is a Royal Marine and I don't want to lumber him with a bad car as he knows where I live.

Olly said pretty much the same Jay, but I never listen to him on my cars, as I much prefer the Russian roulette approach!

Charles,
We can't have one of our finest driving anything other than a Land Rover, and more specifically a Discovery 3.

Mine didn't put a foot wrong during ownership and it is a proper 7 seater, and if he gets the manual gearbox, they're pretty good on fuel too.

He spends most of his day job (when he isn't driving a desk) driving a Land Rover. The Marines refer to them as s_hit wagons apparently. When I mentioned I might be buying a Defender he told me I was insane.

You should seek out Troon - he's got one and he's a knowledgeable chap about his car, being (I think) an automotive mechanical engineer.

As an aside, there's no 4x4 (perhaps except a GL) that has the length dimension from the back of the front seats to the tailgate, if that's important.

Without exact measurements, I would definitely say that the internal from the back of the drivers seat to the tailgate on my D3 were a fair bit bigger than my S211's.

We bought a solid single bed that couldn't be dismantled and got that in the back with the seats down...

Any E220cdi owners here to give a view on their real mpg?

Fair enough - the single bed measure is a good one - they fit into my S211 as well.

I stand corrected (I think).

My occasional taxi driver (when my usual one is busy) has a facelift 220cdi with 475K on it. Still runs fine. He changed the gearbox at 300K though.

The only thing with the 7 seater is that it's only suitable until they are about 10-12years.

A very reliable car.

Impressive!

I think the children have a chance of getting about 6 years more use of the rear seats, so that is fine.

Anything particular to watch out for on pre-facelift 211 220cdis? He's on the cusp between the two budget wise and I suspect he will plump for lower miles and better equipment if given the choice.

Personally I've told him my 210 would be a brilliant buy :D, but apparently it has to have built in Sat-nav, another order from the long haired general.

He should be aware that pre facelift satnav's are very basic - no 7 digit postcode, for example.

If he's used to TomTom levels of functionality he'll be disappointed.

Good point.

I recall my C55 (an 04 reg) having only six digits. It was a complete waste of space, but the map was quite pretty. I wonder if the female mind would think that was more important?

He still knows where I live though if something isn't right.

Nice although .....

It's the same price though as my old 2008 E320cdi Brabus D6 (7 seater) (81K) which is now for sale at Bowkers Preston. I know which one I'd prefer to drive! My car was faultless. Oh and I have nothing to do with the sale.

It's only the latest NTG 4.5 that has 7 digit postcodes (2012).
