I know that, but to be sure a 2006 car should be fine, 2005 can suffer in my understanding.

I'd say with your budget your only really looking at pre-facelift and non-dealer? Unless your looking at high mileage anyway.

I've come to realise this as I have started looking around seriously. I am considering reorganising my budget.

I've been looking on autotrader and there are post-facelift W211s available within your budget.

I know about the grill difference between pre and post facelift, but could anyone tell me any other sure fire ways to spot either pre or post facelift cars? preferably with a photo to illustrate?

Mirrors are different on post facelifted cars, they stick out more

I've been looking at the estates, and the pre and post facelift cars seem to have back lights which are identical - any other hints to differentiate them?

Just look for the mirrors and sod everything else, if they are the integrated one piece style then its pre-face lift, if they're the tear drop shape they're post.

Easy peasy.

Also I think on the face lift cars they did away with the silver trim round the gear selector and made it the same trim as the rest of the interior, however I am not sure.

So look at the mirrors instead, works everytime.

On the estate, the indicator and reversing lights are black rather than white on the pre-facelift.

The easiest way that I tell is by looking at the front indicators - pre-facelift, the lens is fairly plain. Post-facelift, the lens has horizontal 'slats'. Sorry, can't find two comparison photos right now.

And the bottom of the front grille, and the whole front end, has more of a V 'point' to it.

Estate rear light lenses: Pre-face-lift = white and red. Post face-lift = grey and red.
Estate third brake light: Pre-face-lift = about 40cm wide. Post face-lift = full width.

I am based in London, the car is kept at my place in Stanmore.

Last service was £550 ish, so i dont know what that is, but I presume it was not a basic service, done only a month and half ago at Mercedes Benz Colindale, AND it has a full mercedes main dealer history

No Pano roof.. dont like the new roofs, as they are too bulky, and the older styles had cleaner lines.

No accidents. Tony Fawkes touched up the bumper scuffs, car park marks, and gave car full polish etc.. really looks show room condition for its new home!

The car is very tidy, and now id say it is as new after they tidied up the car.

car is 2005 1 owner + dealer, 31k on clock, MOT'd and Tax'd

Im using the s class more and more, and yes after her little polish few weeks back, i am liking her again, and as im not the biggest fan of the new shape, i had been considering keeping it, but i think i can use the money towards something else.. even another fun toy...or pressie on WAG (not both at same time lol)
