Pre / post facelift 320 CDi engine differences

2003 S320 CDi
Hi,

After selling my 1994 S500 Coupe and more recently my 1996 S320, I am in the process of acquiring a 2003 S320 CDi and I am told it is in need of a replacement engine (168k miles).

I know that the post facelift engine has a higher power rating but I would like to know if this is purely down to electronics / ancilliaries or if the replacement engine needs to be a post facelift version in order for it to work correctly.

Any advice appreciated.

Facelift engine is V6, prefacelift I6. Search, plenty of threads about pros/cons. Replacement :confused::doh::eek:
No SBC in facelift. Minor cosmetic changes, outside mirrors, pointy nose etc. Some safety issues, advanced emergency braking system, neck-pro head rests etc.

I should have clarified that it is the newer I6 engine.

A seller on ebay has written to advise that two ways to distinguish the old I6 versus newer I6 engine - the newer one uses an electronic EGR valve and has a different high pressure fuel pump.

Unless anyone can advise otherwise, sounds like I would be better off getting what the seller suggests will be a straight swap - just reduces the number of engines available.

The best way is the engine number, early is cdi2 and later is cdi3 not up on cdi engine numbers, the main difference is the fuelling side of things and the egr, pretty sure as a resault the head is different.
 
Iirc the early IL6 CDI's were 199bhp and the 2002 onwards were 204bhp.
 
But weren't all W211 engines already with higher fuel pressure systems (CDI3)? If not, I belive it's not just swapping thing... EGR control and injection ECU programs are different I'm afraid (could be done by remapping?). But W210's are workin pretty well with older 320CDIs, so what's the hurry change it?
