Pre road trip maintenance

Has the gearbox had its second oil and filter service yet ? It’s due at 75k ish .
Had the car had the ABC hydraulic fluid changed ?
Other than that make sure you have breakdown cover and enjoy . Take pics for a thread :)
Thanks for the heads up Wighty. Do you know where I can find out what needs doing on a SL at various milages?

Maybe the glovebox manual ?

Any MB independent will tell you . The specialist’s will know older high mileage cars better than MB and may be able to be reactive ahead of future problems . MB will just go by the box and fix broken stuff .

Start a thread on here and someone will fill it with a big list of stuff to work through . It’s mainly going to be the same list that repeats itself over time/mileage .

Type NC500 into the search box (top right) and you'll see a stream of advice about how to organise your road trip.

Re your car, just do your the usual "pre-flight" checks now - well before you go: oil, tyres (condition, depth of tread, and don't forget state of the spare)

If you're doing 500 miles in a day going up to Arran , I'd "take" a liberal supply of podcasts, but each to their own.

The best service area in the country is Tebay on the M6. A very funky "Farm Shop" style offering. Well worth planning a comfort break there. Lots of interesting and good value things to pick up. The catering? A bit "meh," but it's still a good place to stop, with great views, and interesting food from the shop, if not from the cafe.

Don't forget your waterproofs, goretex walking boots, rain hat and sweaters. Leave the shorts and sandals at home.

Is that Loch Awe?

Personally i wouldn't go up further than Ullapool, the more interesting stuff is south of there.

Re the Haggis. The information provided ignores the Uppies and the Downies. It's the Uppies with their shorter front legs that create the large snow balls in winter when they think they can be a Downie.

The best roads and probably scenery are going North from Ullapool to Durness. I would definitely do that bit, living nearby we usually go a couple of times a year.

I would agree, the landscape itself is like no other part of the UK, totally unique. Head towards Durness and you have the best beaches in the UK, the best Choclatier in Scotland as well as John Lennons Memorial Garden and Smoo Cave. As you leave Durness, you have the large layby that the coaches use which is usually full of ducks which surround your car looking for any food on offer.

Be prepared for crap roads and VERY expensive fuel I've just returned from a 1200 mile round trip normal petrol here £138,9 ltr the last motorway stop on the M6 before you turn off it was £176.9 but the scenery is stunning especially on a day like today the average price was around the £155.9

I’d also carry a litre of engine oil and ABC hydraulic fluid. I’d also consider getting a spare wheel (spacersaver) as a puncture left me stranded for 7 hours.

Thumbs up for the spare wheel, that’s a must.
We did it a few years ago, stunning views through the west coast. Bealach na Bà is a challenge when it’s busy but worth it,
Give yourself plenty of time and don’t rush the journey, some of the beaches are beautiful and deserted.
Take a few tools, change your brake fluid and enjoy it.
