Pre-Track day questions

When I did Bedford I tried to chase down a Porsche GT3 in the Nissan. - I overcooked it on the back straight and went across the cobbled section; the only real harm was a cracked windscreen and Churchill don't need to know how I managed to crack it as long as I paid the excess.

Ironically my friend was also chasing the GT3 and over-cooked it on a corner. - He did some grass cutting for them.

Funny when it happens isn't it. Your balls suddenly deflate and your butt hole puckers. When mine finally snapped itself round, I think I shouted "sh1t!".

I spoke to the helpful people at Silverstone, and they confirmed the tethering was essential. Still a little worried about removing the tethering pad adhesive from the dash. Any suggestions for creating a tether point? Could it be a second suction mount?

They also do not allow external cameras - even with an additional tether - unless it was mounted on a caterham rollcage or similar.

I'm going to borrow a GoPro 5, and a couple of mics, one of which I'm planning on putting near the exhaust - one near one of the air intakes for a bit of that lovely induction sound. I've always wanted a good recording of the noise. Fingers crossed!

3 days to go - getting properly excited now.

Amazing how much weight you can take out of the car. Must have removed at least 50kg easy (child seats, parcel shelf, spare wheel etc)

Got mounts, tethers, insurance, instructor

Just did a test with the intake mic. Work in progress, as it's a little difficult to get the level right but I think you get the gist. Loving the throttle yawn - lots of air going in!

I feel like it deserves a proper write up, but I can sum it up in 2 words

Awesome
Expensive

Awesome - Experience :new respect for the car, amazing track, cool people, the NOISE!
Expensive - Finished off brake discs, pads, tyres. Oil + filter, nearly 2 tanks of super @ >10mpg

Amazing day, but underestimated consumption of 'consumables'. Car was amazing in straighter sections, but (not surprisingly) very nose heavy in the corners.

Would I do it again? Absolutely
Would I do it again in my car? Absolutely not!

Nice one, Mark. Looks like you had a great day! :)

Has anyone been to Oulton Park, as opposed to Silverstone? living in Wrexham, the former is much nearer.

If so, how did you find it? Pros and cons would be good!

I'm thinking of taking my Brabus modified/tuned C320CDI (show below) there for a track day.

It's got lowered sports suspension, uses 19" Mandrus super-lightweight alloys, low-profile (30) Goodyear Eagle F1 Asy 2s, and been fitted with Bilstein B6 shock absorbers, EBC drilled GD Sports discs and Yellowstuff pads.

In terms of fluids and fuels, it runs on Evans Powercool 180 coolant, Motul 300V (5W30) Ester-based racing oil and Shell V-Power Nitro+ diesel, with an occasional top up of Torco Diesel Accelerator (high-cetane race fuel concentrate).

All of the above, since I've been using them, have improved performance considerably, in various areas. Is there anything else I should consider using/fitting before taking my car onto the track?

Marco.

I've only ever done Oulton Park in the Nissan, and that was a few years ago with other GTiRs. - I think it was the Island circuit.

The only thing I went through was fuel, but I was taking it fairly easy (not like Bedford).

I don't think my CLK will make a great track car, but if you know of a cheap day I'd be tempted to test it out. - If for not other reason than to play with the paddles.

At my AMG Exxperience in a C63 at MB World I asked the Stig who drove me what consumption they got.

6 MPG

Cool... This would be my first ever time on a track, so initially I'd be taking it easy, familiarising myself with the track itself and listening to the advice of instructors.

I wouldn't like to be guilty of over-confidence and suffer the consequences. However, being a fast (but safe) driver normally, once I'd got a few laps under my belt, I'd like to test out the car's performance, especially the 'race-tuned' aspects of its design

Forgot to add that I've also had K&N air filters fitted :)
