Private Plate Query

I part-exchanged my last car and the dealer was happy for me to keep my private plates. He took my car in on the private plate, but signed part 2 of the DVLA form V317 and I completed section 3. Now the DVLA have told me that to transfer the number they need the V5 for my old vehicle - problem being that I handed it over when I p/ex'd.

Will the dealer be able to sell the old vehicle now on my private plate or should I ask that he hand over the V5 to allow me to complete the transfer?

It's not particularly valuable, so truth be told I'm not that bothered about it either way... just interested to know where I stand.

As things stand, the plate is still with the car, so if the dealer sells the car without putting the plate on retention, the plate will pass to the new owner. If he still has the V5C at the moment and you want to retain or transfer the plate, you'll need to come to some arrangement with him fairly quickly.

If the dealer sells the car with the plate and you already have an agreement with them to retain the mark then you should have recourse on the dealer. Get it in writing!

The moral here is that if you want to retain a plate when selling a car, best bet is to put the number on retention before you part with the V5C. While you may be able to hold the dealer liable for not having kept his word, actually getting the plate back would depend on the new owner being co-operative. (Having said that, I appreciate that the OP isn't too concerned about the plate in this instance.)

As you say it is not worth much consider this as it costs £125 to put it on retention.

Well, the dealer's actually been reasonable and he says he'll look out the V5 for my p/ex. Was going to do retention but was too impatient to get the new car! Next time perhaps...
