problem with IE

Howard said:
Hi Andrew....

Running Zonealarm Pro, AVG free, AdAware Pro and Spybot Search and Destroy ....

Are these ok ? any others i should think about..
Looks good ... the only other one I'd add would be Microsoft AntiSpyware. Make sure they're all updated and do full system scans.

Did you have any plans to do any work today? :D

Running scans at the mo ...

Will get MS antispyware .. is it a free download ?

Not working today, painting the kitchen (and fixing computer  )

Thanks for everything so far , IE still is Kaput , what next ?

Is this the error message?:

STOP: 0x00000005 (parameter, parameter, parameter, parameter) INVALID_PROCESS_ATTACH_ATTEMPT

MS AntiSpyware is a free d/l.

Perhaps d/l CCleaner to clean out your registry as well ...

No it just says ' the application failed to initialise properly (0x0000005) ' click on OK to terminate the application

Woah , that Ccleaner just erased 1,583 mb of crap......

I tyhink you said you had win 2000 on your pc. I would suggest upgrading to XP. That should fix the problem. If it doesn't, at least you may get a more meaningful error.

Hardly worth buying XP for my old machine i wouldn't have thought, plus installing it is going to wipe everything on it, 60 +gig ......

Would just like to fix IE , all other applications work fine .....

Howard,

If you buy XP upgrade you wont lose a thing. You'll just get the new OS plus all your files/setting intact!

IMHO XP is the best thing Microsoft has released. Thats not to say its the best thing in the marketplace just the best thing Mr Gates has given/sold to us!

P.S Send our regards to Rick. Hope it's benign and a speedy recovery.

Have you tried to download the latest IE service pack? Try this

Or you could try reinstalling the program from Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > Add/Remove Windows Components > Internet Explorer. Untick it, then continue

Reinstall the program from a CD. Find a free Wanadoo or other ISP CD. They pack a free IE 6 on most of them (Do not bother with AOL though).

Hope that helps you.

Alex

Cheers Alfie..

Cheers Tinkypot..

Alfie, i shall hopefully be seeing Mr P tomorrow, as i'm sure you know they cancelled the tour and came home , and he has been in bed depressed since then :(

However, dad has been given a wake up call by this and is going to stop smoking along with RP in order to give him support, one of our lifeboat crew works for a cancer drug company and is chatting to some of the top surgeons in the country (best one is in Canada apparently) in order to sort it all out...so hopefully will end happily....

I shall pass on your regards.

Good plan with the un-install and the free IE6 , i reck i've got it on my freeserve cd....

OK, tried uninstalling IE6 and re-installing it, all went well, but same error message :(

Howard, any luck with this yet?

You don't have any "toolbars" installed do you, like Yahoo or Google? If so, try uninstalling them first

If not, the only other thing I can think of would be a repair installation; seems to me that a component IE is relying on to start is failing.

Does IE start under Safe Mode? If so your PC maybe infected.

When you start your PC, keep hitting F8(?). This should bring up a preboot menu. Select Safe Mode without networking. When Windows starts up attempt to run IE. If it works see if you can open up some web files on you hard disk. Real Internet will not work under these safe mode conditions, but locally stored pages will. Do a C: search of your PC for html/htm files.

If IE starts and displays these pages, try uninstalling any IE add-ons you may have installed (as suggested above). Also do a full virus scan (with latest updates), full spyware scan (Ad-Ware is good), and also download McAfee Stinger (do a google).

I suggest you download all these before you start in Firefox or Opera, then do as above in Safe Mode.

Tell us how you get on...

Alex

OK chaps, will try all that , i have my IT guru coming to stay over Christmas so i shall leave it to him ....

I shall show him all your advice and let him proceed as frankly its all starting to sound a little bit complicated....

I'll use the new PC until then, and very fast and nice it is too ....... :D

Will let you know once a solution has been found....

I appreciate all your help so far guys .....
