I have up for sale a lovely condition 500SL that a few of you may have noticed here:

http://www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk/classic-car-page.php/carno/127069

The problem is I accepted an offer from a chap in Ireland who wants to send a driver and trailer for it next week, HOWEVER he won't pay a deposit or indeed the full balance until the car is actually loaded onto the trailer and he gets a call from the driver confirming this. Obviously a bank transfer can be instantaneous but for example I've had it where Nationwide transfers can take a while. He's also offering a bankers draft, but again the driver will only hand it over once the car is on the trailer - Which therefore means there's not time to go and cash it...

I'm suspicious - thoughts?

No deposit, car has to be on trailer before payment? Stinkier than a North Sea trawler, IMO.

Cash?
Take, key and make driver wait while you bank the draft.

Dont do it. Cash before the car is even moved towards the trailer. Almost sounds like a nigerian scam where they pay via paypal and their "agent" will come and pick up the goods!!

who would be responsible if the car got damaged whalst loading it onto the trailer?

does smell a tad fishy to me.

Perhaps a deposit will leave a paper trail (which he doesnt want).

I would only sell under your terms, not his. If he genuinly wants the car then he will have to conform to more mutually agreeable payment terms.

If he refuses then he probably wasnt a genuine buyer but a genuine scammer.

Could be as above. You could ask for the key to the vehicle the trailer is attached too, let them load the car but wait till you have confirmation from your bank the funds are in your account before handing the key back.

Or is that your drive in the pictures? If so it seems big enough for them to get the car and trailer in, once in block the exit to the drive with another vehicle till you have confirmation of funds transfer.

I'd have nothing to do with it - Tell the fella you've decided not to sell and the deals off. Have you provided him with your address details?

You say that your 500SL is in lovely condition, then regarding your buyer, forget him as "there are some more fish in the sea."

I accept that he may be totally cautious chap but he is being totally unreasonable.

Beware of bankers' drafts. They can be counterfeited and totally worthless.

If you really want to sell it to this guy, do it for cash BUT, the trailer driver and you go to the bank in your car and get it paid in over the counter. This way, the new owner has the car on the trailer, you have the cash in the bank and the bank teller would have checked at the time of payment that the cash was not forged.

QED

My thoughts exactly. The money in the bank prior to any loading. The driver can inspect the car in situ prior to handing over the cash, then go to bank, then and only then should you allow it to be loaded.

If that isn't acceptable then tell hem to swivel.:D:D

Thanks all, I've since spoken to him again and he started going "it sounds like you don't trust me, you have my address, name and phone number blah blah blah". I basically told him to eff off, as nothing says dishonesty like a person accusing you of not trusting them!!! Why the hell would I trust him, I don't know him from Adam!

Come on guys, some of you must be tempted by this car, genuine callers welcome!

Er no, what you have is what he claims are his address, name and phone number.

Cash, paid in whilst car is outside with you holding the key and logbook until the money is in (I've done this before with an £18,000 car and 3 of the £20s paid in were bent!!!), or even better cash withdrawn in same bank as you bank with and paid in straight away without taking it out the bank, or Banker's Draft produced and presented to the 'buyer' in front of you (this can still be cancelled I understand but tricky if the buyer is no longer in possession of the draft itself i.e. once you've paid it in)... are pretty much the only ways in my experience.

You did the right thing DJ and i'm sure you'll have no problem selling the car - it looks fantastic.

This is exactly what happened with a previous cl that i was selling.

I will see if i can find the morons number as still lying around somewhere.

I have been watching the Market for 107s as I have been thinking of buying one. Your car was top of my hit list. It is very well priced for a lovely car. Don't lose the faith - it will sell. Sadly I cannot make you an offer at the moment as I don't have a garage at present and would not want to keep this out on the road. That may change as currently house hunting but probably not in time to make a deal with you. Good luck!
