Problems with a Blaupunkt cd radio

The Blaupunkt cd player fitted in my CLK has developed as problem where when either the radio or cd is on and playing, the sound keeps going off. At first it was just now and again, a very quick blip, and then it was fine again. But now its much more frequent and goes off for longer periods of time and the only sound i get is like a "thump thump" through the speakers. The player itself stays powered up during these episodes and appears to be fine, the display stays on etc. I had a quick look at the connnections on the back of the set but all seems fine. Are these sets prone to problems or is there likely to be a problem elsewhere ?
Its the Sevilla rdm 138 if that helps.
Just wondering is it time to bin it for something else ?
