Project C43 W202

Looking really good Abb, cracking job you're doing there mate.

As for boring us with pictures, feel free. I'm enjoying them even though they are making me think I should be doing a bit more with mine. :D

Cheers Dave, I must admit I have thought at times....WTF have I done taking this on, but then I see progress and get a new lease of love for it!
In the back of the ML is goes, to be reunited with the rest of the car (brought it home to work on it, as its some 15 odd miles away at my sisters home, much to her delight! :D)

A couple of hours and a few expletives later, the ARB and the rear subframe are finally on the car, complete with new bilstein B8 shocks and eibach springs.

Nice one but I would have redone the ARB as opposed from buying new.Just rubbed down with a scratch and clean pad then painted.

Apart from it falling off the bench after I'd flipped it over to get to the other side of it, everything went well with it, and it looks the part though, let's face it, not many are going to see it anyway. :)

Edited to remove pics I decided are irrelevant to this thread.

Impressed by your ‘ cut-n-shut’ on the brake backplate. :thumb: Good thinking Batman.

How did you re-attach the two halves?

Don't delete the pics Dave, its not allowed! I would have redone it, however I had bought both ARBs from a fellow member on here as part of a 'bulk buy' of other parts, so thought I may aswell put it to use :)

TBH I can't take credit for the idea, I got it from a thread on this very forum! I made a little backing/joining plate, placed it in situ, drilled all the holed prior to cutting. Cut and 'opened' it up resembling a pac man, closed and fitted the plates bolting it all up.

This is a brilliant thread for those intending to do their rear end. The photos are a great point of reference.

What tool did you use for the extraction / insertion of the rear carrier bushes?

Just found this thread ABB, you are doing an amazing job saving the C43. I too have always had a softspot for the 202.

Reminds me of all the work I did on my 126, and sort of hankering to do it again, but next time I want to do it on a bike, should be a lot easier :)

If its the wheel carrier you make reference to, it is as detailed below. If its the rear subframe carrier....my trusty mechanic did those and not entirely sure how as i wasn't present. A special tool perhaps? Cam find out if you need the info?

For this I used a piece of 10mm threaded rod
A flat metal plate (same diameter size as bush)
An over sized socket (for the bush to drop into)

I then placed the rod through the bush, plate one side and socket the other, secured in place using nuts and tightening the nut from the plate end forced the bush out. Took quite a while, a lot of penetrating oil and the odd obscenity thrown in for good measure.
To refit the bush, cleaned the internal part of the carrier, applied a little red grease to the exterior of the bush, placed a socket either side, one slightly larger as per removal and one the same size (no plate this time). Using the same method compressed it into place, went in much much easier than removing it.

I would imagine it would be much easier with the proper tools, but this method was very effective I must say.

Project at a standstill at the min due to me.......not being there :D Should continue in a couple of weeks once I am back in the UK. Whilst been away I have purchased all the fluids which will require replacing, as well as gaskets, filters etc, another task I know which won't be getting done for a while, but I feel as though I am making progress if I buy stuff (when I am not there) when I can to assist me later!
Obviously the back end was fitted, but truth be know it was more of a trial, as none of its been torqued up to spec. So could anyone help me out with the torque specifications for the subframe mounts and associated linkages or point me in the right direction to find the info?

With a project of this scale I’d recommend a subscription to the official Mercedes-Benz club. You’ll get access to the official WIS (Workshop Information System) and EPC for part numbers/exploded diagrams etc. It’ll have all the torque figures and much more on there. Well worth the joining fee for that alone IMHO as well as other benefits.

Thanks for that Will, I am actually a fully paid member on there :) Access to WIS and EPC only come through after so many months (6 IIRC) unless I have mis read the blurb regarding it. I signed up for 2 years some 4 months ago.

Excellent thread Abb, looking forward to seeing it through to completion

I believe you need your membership card to access, but that arrived within a few weeks.

Time for another update. Managed to look at WIS & EPC but not much joy as it's not compatible with my Macbook :wallbash:
Moving swiftly on, once the rear subframe was bolted back up, continued with the rear brake installation, which consisted of OEM discs, pads, parking brake shoes, as well as new calipers! Pics with all part numbers as they may help someone else out.
