Hi
Would it be ok to lightly sand and then paint the propshaft? It looks a bit tatty.
I'm thinking a light dusting of VHT mat black exhaust paint.
I'll take care not to disturb any balance weights.
Cheers

You'll be absolutely fine.

Would be surprised if you notice any difference in vibes and its a good idea may do mine also!

Who's gonna see your propshaft?!

It's not like corrosion is ever going to be a problem for it.

What's the reason?

You haven't met Rashman or his car have you?:D

I used a rotary sander with a strip & clean pad on both the prop and the drive shafts on my 190E. The pads are strong enough to get the rust and crud off but won't scratch the metal under it.

Oh, and I always use Hammerite on stuff like this. There's no heat build up on a prop, and very little on drive shafts so it's good to go. :)

Hey
Thanks for the replies. I've taken out the subframe stripped it down had it blasted. While it's off I've stripped the underside and am dealing with all the rusty bits. It's pretty hard going and while I'm at it I thought I may as well clean up everything. Propshaft isn't too bad but what the hell.
Cheers
Robert

Subframe done. Got new Lemforder arms, new wheel bearings, new diff mounts, new handbrake cables and shoes, brake splash guards and other things I can't remember.
Car is 16 years old I've had it since new so its worth it to me.
Started off as a ABS ring fault then went downhill from there.

Its a long job, I sympathize with you.. I just completed my Jeep Ready for the winter so I know what your going through..:(

It's certainly taking a while. I quite enjoy it though. Laying an your back with an angle grinder and a hot air gun has a certain therapeutic quality that's hard to beat.;) As for my DIY attempts at welding although I have never tried it I'm a plumber and have done brazing, lead burning and a whole host of metal forming just not with steel. I'm only going to try as a last resort tho if t can't get a welder to turn up and I've got a few weeks of stripping before I make the decision.
I've looked at those rust converters and tried some Kurust on selected bits but I'm not convinced on its long term effect. Ive been taking it back to bare steel as far as I can mechanically then using deox gel (citric acid) slabbered on and left overnight. That gets most of it off. Any left I whack on a Phosphoric gel (mistral hull cleaner) and that usually gets the rest. What it misses it turns to black iron phosphate.
It's then coated with 2k epoxy (Jotun 87) same as rustbusters 121. Then gets seam sealed then more lashings of epoxy. Then some stone chip (raptor) then 2k colour. Should out live me.
