I use the Muc-Off Silica protector and find it very good. Leave the wheels silky smooth so the crud just wipes off.
Saying that, I have also found a decent wax such as Swissol or Diamondbrite wheel protector to also be very good.
I would say just treat it as any painted surface and look after it.
