Hi Guys and Girls,

I'm from Johannesburg, South Africa, and recently bought my second Merc. The first was a 1976 W114 230.4 which I restored and sold - I regret selling...

So now, I just bought a 1996 W202 C180 Classic Manual for a steal price. She has some small issues, but that to be expected of a car with 370 000km on the clock. I intend to sort these out and keep her as a daily drive.

Her body is good, she is a one owner vehicle which was maintained by MB Agents up until 280 000km, after that serviced and maintained by a MB qualified mechanic, so drive train wise she is 100%.

Seats are a bit warn, but nothing a recover/redye cannot fix.

The following are on the cards for replacement:

1) Both engine mountings
2) Upper Ball joints - Lower ones are new
3) Front susppension rubbers

I have one concern thou, the car was fitted with new front brake pads and disc's, however, under heavy breaking there is a sound coming from the passenger side (front left in SA) that sounds like brakes being metal on metal. I have taken of the calliper and pads, refitted them, but still the noise is there under hard braking, I cannot see ANY scraping damage on the disc, it's as good as new... Any ideas?

Could it be a wheel bearing?

Looking forward to become a member of this great community...

Regards,
Jakkie.

Welcome to the forum.

As for the brake problem, I wont be much use but I will make a couple of suggestions,

Check wheel bearing play
Check the back plate isn't rubbing (if fitted)

If possible get someone to sit in the car and apply the brake while you have a look whats going on.

I'm sure someone more technically minded will advise soon, best of luck.
