Hmm I think it's a people carrier because it can carry more than 5 people... The 4*4 is there for safety yes. It's not an estate. Woudl you call a Disco an estate? It's a utility vehicle as well because you will have seat-moving-about-and-xyz-ability.

God what a mess ;).

GL will probably only replace LWB Gs - the SWB soldiers on I believe. Can't get rid of a true 4*4.

It's an alternative to an S. Like an S MPV. Yes that's it...

Have you been at my medication?? :)

I think I know what you mean. A Discovery is a utility vehicle because you can play with the seating configuration.

A Discoverry is a People carrier because it can carry more than five people.

A Discovery is not an estate car because its a 4 x 4?? :D

Does the Audi Quattro have a seven seat option?

Nice post :bannana:

On the road DC? or in the showroom?

There are lots of rumours about Europe only getting the short wheelbase version. Did you actually see a LWB European spec vehicle?

This would definitely quosh the media speculation.

John

It is in DCUK HQ at Milton Keynes and I believe that it is the first to arrive in the UK.

It was Left Hand Drive but, unfortunately, I couldn't tell you if it was a European spec or US spec vehicle.

As far as I am aware both Short and Long wheelbase models will be available - although I would say that the Long is probably too big for UK roads.

I think (I will have to check) that the one I saw is a LWB.

Thanks very much for this information.

In your opinion what vehicle would be of a similar length, are we looking at Sprinter van size, or the smaller V-class Viano?

Regards,
John

Edit:
If the vehicle is on display to the general public, then it would be a bit of an own goal if the vehicle is not European spec, but being a LHD model, it does make me wonder.

Isn't the R Class just the MB version of the Renault Vel Satis, which bombed a couple of years ago but may perhaps soon be shown to be just ahead of its time?
I'm not saying I would buy a Vel Satis but I am currently looking for a replacement for my (wife's) Citroen Picasso.
I am looking for something a bit more upmarket with good power, automatic, all the toys, and am stumped as to what to buy. She who must be obeyed won't drive an estate so I am struggling to find anything that fits the bill other than an SUV - ML/X5/XC90 etc etc.

You cannot be serious!!  My 'boss' will not entertain any thing French and if she thought it even LOOKED like a French vehicle it would be over the cliff before you could say au revoir!!

Bear with me on this, and given you mentioned a Vel Satis...

Motorhouse 2000 in Cannock had a Renault Avantime a few weeks ago. Striking in two tone electric blue and silver. Imagine that on an Espace coupe!! It really was a strange beast, and I'm not surprised they sold so few, making it unviable in the UK. That said, IIRC, c£8-9k for a V6, and about 12 months warranty left, seems like a good buy, if you fancy standing out from the crowd!! It crossed my mind to have it myself.

They also had a 2 litre which I didn't see, but noticed it on the stock list. It's still for sale: http://www.motorhouse2000ltd.co.uk/renavant.html

I drove behind one of those Avantime a few weeks ago..

IIRC they're only a 4 seater.. hence why they sold so few. Espace space for family that doesn't need a family car

My son has just reminded me that one of our neighbours actually has one, in black!!

I will simply say that it does indeed look different.

Right, here are the facts.

The car is in the new reception area at DCUK HQ in MK but is not visible from outside and is therefore not on display to the general public.

It is a long wheelbase model.

Both long and short wheelbase models are expected in the UK.

The long wheelbase is 5157mm in length - slightly less than a Viano Extra Long.

The short wheelbase is 4922mm in length - slightly less than a Viano Long.

The model is scheduled to be launched in June 2006.

Prices are to be confirmed.

Will it clear the bush you chopped down ?

THANK YOU very much indeed for the comparisons. As you previously stated it is a big vehicle.

'She that must be obeyed' drives me around in our medium wheelbase Sprinter so I am confident that she would cope with the size, however it sounds like the long wheelbase version might be vunerable at the numerous car parks where its length might make it protrude into 'trolley alley' :)

:D Dunno, but I bet I would!! ;)

Bye for now,

Having looked at Mercedes Owner today, I am not liking this car. seems a bit pointless, but the write up said it was a GST or something. Grand Sports Tourer? What? How?

Aye well, carry on with that one if you must. I have just been given a company SHOGUN LWB to run about it. And i am pleasantly suprised as its quite good. especially when you consider it took 47seconds to get to 100mph. not bad for a deisel. was very composed for a 4x4. so i have decided that should some unlucky girl's shelf fall in my direction and i find i suddenly need more than 2 seats (Yeah right) i could have a shogun for myself too. :p

so that means i can only think i would need a go in the R class to remember what Mercs are all about.

but here is fuel for the fire!!

At BMW they came out with a X5 and then X3 which is the same car almost. Landrover did the same with the range rover and range rover sport. (Golf Golf plus, Focus- C-MAX, Octavia-Superb, any TVR)

and it seems that Merc have with the A and B class. and to some degree the SL and SLK. well almost. but the R is gonna be positioned above the ML class, sort of CLS territory.
( CLS = Not an S but not an E if you get my drift. and not a CL which is a S with 2 doors and coupe'd, but more an E coupe'd but with 4 doors. rather than the CLK which is kind of a E coupe thing. and not C coupe as they already have the C Sport for that. I think I have sussed how they have got their car model direction having just written this rubbish. They have employed the Porsche man havent they. The 911 come boxster cayen or whatever it is. Just that merc have gone and done it proper with every car.)

anyhow it all means they dont have any direct competitor to the X3. nothing not quite as big as a ML but not as small as C. hmmmmm. now all we need is a letter not used for anyone elses cars and we have new niche market car for those with enough money to get an ML but dont want one but want a Merc that is a 4x4 and not an R. :)

Wonder it they will do a coupe'd sprinter? :D

AUDI Q7 anyone?

By crikey scumbag, it definitely looks like you have been at my medication. :D Thanks for cheering me up. (Too much pain and to little sleep) What on earth are you doing up at this ungodly hour?

I can live with the lengh of the R-class but the more I see pictures of it, the 'bigger' it looks!!! The vehicle is designed for the US market where I suppose big is still good, but the front just looks toooo in your face???

The LWB S-class is not a short vehicle yet it still looks the executive car that you would love to own?

I'm clearly still undecided,

John

dont ask..far too complicated.

I am not sure about the new grills that Merc seem to be going down. bit too brash for me. very yank. still, maybes the car will look better in the flesh. the volvo XC90 is large in the flesh altho it seems to hide it well when you see one.

Good morning scumbag?? (wot a different username you have)
I am desperately hoping for the same thing, but I believe the XC90 is just slightly to big, the XC70 looks the better of the two?? (Just my old fuddy duddy opinion) The new Audi grille in my opinion is a major turn off, BIG and in your face  I have not seen the new A6 estate in the flesh, but having seen the saloon, it has already been struck off our 'like' list.

Regards,
John
