I've got 18 inch AMG's on my R129 and the rear tires need replacing.
275/35z R18 95W

Any suggestions before I go ahead ? Looking at "Black circles" they seem to range from £150+ for mid range tries to £200 for the top brands.

I'm not looking for the ultimate sporting performance and great wet grip which they all seem to boast, just a good general driving and touring tire that lasts.

I had hoped to get back to original 16 inch alloys by now, but these are so bad Id better change them now :(

Cheers

I run Dunlop SP Sport 01 on mine (staggered 18" AMGs) ... have been very happy with those. They're available in an MO ('Mercedes approved') version, which is what I have.

I'm running these all round at the moment, great for cruising.
I'm no tire expert, but a get bit unsure of tire brands I've never heard off before.
Like I say I don't need the highest performing tire on the market, but I'm of the "you get what you pay for" school of thought.

Happy to be proven wrong though ......

Tyres are the only thing that actually touches the road

I only buy premium but just depends how much you value your life.

Mid range tyres are acceptable

For mid range i would look at anything from Kumho / Toyo / Falken / Maxxis / Avon / Uniroyal

They will do what you require

Premium wise Michelin / Continentals are very good. I don't particularly like Bridgestones however

I've been using landsail's on the taxi for a few years now, not a bad tyre, wear well and reasonably quiet.

I'd go for a pair of mid price Falken FK510's if they make that size.

I did !
Having them fitted right now at £175 each. So I'm very much at the top of the mid priced rubber.
Read a few reviews for several tires at this price, or even dearer and they seemed to get very good feedback.
Looking to get new fronts soon as I found the old receipt in the history folder and there 10 years old ! 😂

Probably not unusual with a car like this that isn't a daily driver. If kept in a garage (away from UV light) with the tyres fully inflated then I suspect they won't deteriorate with age anywhere near as quickly.

It depends on which AMG wheels you currently have on your car.
Are they the 18" Monoblock II wheels (8" front and 9" rear)?
or the Two-Piece SL Design (8,5" front and 10" rear)?

If Monoblock II wheels then rear tires should be 265/35/18
If Two-Piece wheels, then 275/35/18

According to this well-respected fitting chart all the 18" AMG rears (9" / 9.5" / 10" wide) used 275/35/18?

Looking more closely at the OP's avatar they appear to be AMG I monoblocs.

Interesting as well. Those are lovely wheels that came in 17" on W208 and some other models I remember.
18" ones are stunning. I believe these wheels were standard on the USA AMG Sport Package ones too.

I haven't seen them on R129 models outside the USA.

I don't think those AMG alloys were ever a factory option for the R129 here (that was always a multi-piece design), but they'd have been available to order as an 'accessory' (like the AMG back box). Or somebody fitted a set later in the car's life. I agree they are good-looking wheels!

This marketing BS that was consumed to produce this type of statement must have been by the bucket load

For the OP: There are plenty of decent budget brand tires available from brands originating from the far east like Nexen and Khumo. The only one that I've had horrible experience with in Sunny which is truly junk.
