Hello,

On the centre console, above the drivers side window switch is what i believe is the electric hood button, the car has the hardtop on at the moment, anyway when i drive along the button flashes red and a warning gong sounds, as soon as i stop the warning gong stops, could anyone tell what this is or means? The car is a 1991 300sl.

thanks

That is the roof switch and the blinking it is telling you that something is wrong, it may not be locked

It gongs when it thinks the roof is NOT locked down fully. Look in your manual to release/re-seat it manually.

Yup what the others said, it means "roof unlocked, do not drive the car".

the hood

i dont have a maunal for the car, how do i re-seat or lock the hood maually?

Jay

sorry, i meant manual.

You might need a fault code erasing - the roof could well be locking fully but a sensor causing an error.

If it isn't locking properly then it may be because one of the rear latches is in the wrong position - this will require the roof to be removed - the soft -top cycled and then the roof replaced - alternatively you can use the tool and do it manually with the roof off.

This video might help:

the hardtop

thanks for the advice, i will check the tool kit for the hex tool. just out of interest how do you normally take the hardtop off and put it back on?

sorry for the questions but the circamstances in which i bought the car meant i never actualy met the original owner, bought from a disposal firm who didnt have a clue.

When you press the button, it releases the hydraulic locks on the 4 corners and the roof raises, you then lift it off.

When putting it on, you just lower the roof pegs into the holes, then pressing the button the locks close and pull the roof down

Not forgetting to unplug the flylead for the heated rear window first!

The roof is fairly heavy and cumbersome, it's a 2-person job. And ideally you want a trolley/stand and/or padded storage bag for when it's off the vehicle.

Erm .. do you know that the hood works properly?

I always forgot that, and the electric hoist would take the roof up, with the car hanging from the cable

r129 hood

no. i dont know if the hood works properly. i have been told it does and i have seen photos of it up, i took a chance on the car. sometimes you have to if the price is right.

i hope it does work properly, otherwise you can guess my next post.....

If there are problems with the roof (either the mechanism, the fabric, or the plastic windows) you could be looking at serious money to fix. The issue you have with the hard top not locking may not be a good sign.

I do not think that the 129 is a car that you can take a chance with, the light flashing confirms that you could have serious problems, have you tried to unlock with the key yet.

You could disconnect the battery for 5 mins and see if it clears

It's not necessarily serious - I've had the same problem on my cars when a latch has got out of sync. You can pull fuse 4 in the boot to reset the soft-top ECU without having to disconnect the battery.

Like you say, R129s can hide potentially large bills - hopefully not in this case.
