My search for the perfect SL R129 continues and the latest possible is a 98 Designo blue with pan roof and (one piece :( ) AMG 18"s

Is des blue like mystic blue can anyone advise pls also are the one piece 18`s likely to be standard - I suspect they are none original but a little knowledge would help.

Ideally I want Obs Black with Helios, pan roof and 2 piece AMG 18" but this combo aint prolific - I did find a T reg 22k miles with all but the wheels but it was top $ at £14,500 and once the wheels were added it would be £17k min - way over budget

Dave

I think the colour you want is Designo Mystic Blue... a lovely colour... Rajinder_1 has this colour on his SL.

Factory fit AMG wheels were always split-rim on the R129. Originally 3-piece, then 2-piece. They were standard on the SL60, optional on the others.

Because these are so expensive, where AMG wheels have been added later they are often one piece or replica (non M-B) split-rims.

The one I am going to see is a 98 / R special edition and the seller is adamant they are the original wheels - it says special edition on the sills

so much choice - I even found a silver arrow at reasonable cost

Dave

Ah - is it black with red leather inside? There was a special edition immediately before the 1999 model year facelift (when the engine changed). And yes I think it had monoblock 18" AMG wheels.

Designo variable blue with grey leather with 18" AMGs was another popular special edition.

Yes KLP thats it exactly - Im 90% getting it - it needs two sunvisor mirror covers for some reason - anyone know if they are available ?

Dave

THAT is exactly the model - except im on 67k and £12k ONE THING the seller does not know and I cant figure out is a small red button looks like an led but its a button visible above heater lcd and bel;ow central vents - anyone know what it is ?

Not seen this button on any other SL`s ???

Is there a parts seller for interior trim ?

Cheers
Dave

Confirm there's nothing there on my '97.

Something to do with an alarm/immobiliser perhaps?

Bill its on the one i am after and on the one in Bramhall - cant be a coincidence can it - could the Spec Edition have a secret ?

ps I asked about your lovely wheels - are they new and original ?

It probably shuts off the interior motion sensors for the alarm. Press it before exiting the car and it will flash and the sensors will be disabled.

More likely to be a later version of MBSS (the UK security package) than fitted to my early '97 car.

Yes :)

From MB or do you have a reasonable supplier - they are approx £3500 to buy from alloys online

Could well be. I can't remember offhand how to do it on mine, I know the movement sensors are disabled automatically when the hood is down. Never locked it with anyone inside.

They are available cheaper in Germany. Alloy Wheels Direct sourced a set for me that were technically ;) 'used' and therefore a lot less than new ones at UK list price. Obviously you could save a bit by going direct, they do come up on eBay.de for example.

I have put in a fair offer for the R 67k Designo of £12k subject to everything working as it should - fingers crossed

Well after kissing a few more frogs I have now "reserved" pending an RAC check a SL320 R 98 in a met blue I cannot name yet as the RU site is down VIN is WDB1290632F167286 if anyone can run it.

It came about as I decided to have a look at a car I had previously not considered because A, its 4 miles away and you always miss the bleeding obvious, B, The trader pic was really bad, C It has 16" wheels
rolleyes.gif
and D No mention of a pan roof

I get there and find a really dark met blue nearly black with mushroom. 68k Full inchcape service and maintenance log with all receipts showing £3k work in 18 months plus loads previously, Panoramic with mint blind, perfect door cards, no dings, the 16" ers are like new with nearly new Contis (shame to waste them) a really honest motor. Dealer was an RAC approved garage and was selling it for a friend who just happens to live right by me and was a high up at LFC (his wifes car)

As I am paranoid I asked for the RAC check and 12m tax thrown in and we have a deal - if the RAC check throws up anything it will be sent to Inchcape to be rectified and this amount deducted from the purchase price.

On that basis I have paid a £500 deposit pending RAC report and road test / hood test / gizmo test BUT its had little real use for its 10 years

Im sure its a straight six as its May 98 and it has a centre stop light, hardtop stand (listed on bill of sale), unmarked leather, MB mats, Pioneer

cd stacker (oh for an audio 10 or a Becker), felt cubby fitted not cassette box, little red mini key imobiliser, tracker.

What made me realise it was a well looked after model was the centre heater vents - it has the two plastic adjusters still in place - soooo many of the ones I have seen dont have them (no idea why)

I will (assuming it checks out) run the wheels for a while until I can get some AMG ii`s (everyone says they are for sale everywhere - can I find em LOL) on it and then after some TLC I will have the car I covet for under £10k and in a state of completeness and good condition (ness)

The colour is 189 - greenish-black (emerald black) (black opal) (smaragdsschwarz).
