R129 headlamps?

I am currently looking at a stolen recovered,96 sl500 which is missing the headlamps,i have been informed by the owner that it was fitted with xenon type headlamps,can anyone advise if this could be correct as i cannot find any information for this age car ever being fitted with xenons
If these were fitted would it be possible to fit ordinary facelift type headlamps?

I didn't think Xenons were fitted until the final facelfit, ie 98 onwards.

I think xenon's were available as a option from 96 onwards. The best bet is the check the spec from the VIN. Is the car a green one by chance?

That car was recently on the copart salvage auction. Thats probably where the seller bought it.

First Id was to check the mileage was genuine, from the photos I saw the last time the interior looked pretty worn for 50k. The wheels are w208 17" AMG's so not really the correct wheels for the car. The fronts are 7.5"x17", the stock 16" wheels for a r129 are 8" wide.

The plus side is, this car didnt have xenon's from factory as there is a headlamp range adjustment switch next to the headlamp switch. So halgen lamps will be fine.

Thanks for your observation,the guy whom owns the car apparantly put on copart,but did not receive reserve,i also think the car looks to have done more than the 52k as drivers seat bolster slightly worn through,i have not looked at car but,he has described car over phone,all electrics working,except air con not blowing cold,he has changed the wheels to original 8 hole type,although if i buy i will be putting the 18s on as my old car,the paintwork according to mercedes is desighno special order as are the seats???my old 93 merc had 178k but seats were still good,but i am told that the newer version sl's were not such good quality
i still think the car is a bargain with £500 reduction..........................unless anyone out there has a lowish mileage sl500 or 600 for bargain price.???

I have just bought this car ----
mercedes SL500 limited Edition 1996 model (129) on eBay (end time 31-Jul-10 17:46:38 BST)

basically sound although not looked after,needing a little tlc,but mechanically a1
also all electrics working and soft top roof superb. paid much less than asking price so i think i have a bargain.
is there anyone on this site can give any info on this car,there can't be to many in this colour with carbon fibre dashpanels both factory options.
also looking for pair of headlamps if anyone can help

Don't think the steering is original for an SL500 (looks like its off a C-class sport model).

Apart from that, looks ok, you might find a set of headlights on ebay for cheap.

Thanks for that,not sure about steering wheel,as i noted a siver jap import on e bay yesterday,same year same steering wheel,regarding the headlamp advertised,i think it is the older style r129 as the later had MAGNIFIER type bulls eye headlamps .....i think

Richard, the steering wheel is original for post facelift 129's

The magnifier headlamps are the xenon ones. You wont get them much shy of £800. The ones in the link are the correct ones for your car.

The ad says it will come with a years MOT, how would it pass without headlamps?

Bought car without mot not bothered for the price i paid!! although test runs until October anyhow,[ i guess the guy was going to put headlamps off one of his other Sls for test and then change but who knows?????????
interesting point about headlamps but the wiring is conventional 3 plug block connector so obviously were standard fitment
