Am I right in thinking that the rear window heater is permanently &/or automatically switched on?

No. It's a manual operation (the button on the aircon).

We had a huge debate over this and the effectiveness of the rear screens they do not work very well as they are low powered, but as stats says push the button on the heater panel

That explains why I couldn't find the button........doh
