Hi guys R129 roll over bar? How is this supposed to work.

Presently locked down and cannot get it up? Do I have to roll the car for it to come up??????:bannana::bannana::bannana:

Colin

Does the button in the centre of your dash below the stereo not work?

Do you have a handbook? You are supposed to raise the rollbar manually (using the switch that Sp!ke mentioned) if the rear seats are occupied.

It will deploy automatically if the car's sensors think it is in danger of flipping. You don't necessarily have to crash.

M-B were said to have spent more on the development of the rollbar than the rest of the car combined!

To spare you looking for the handbook - the switch on the right side of the console in this pic is the one that's supposed to get it up:

From the OP's other posts he has problems with the hood too, which could be related if the roll bar is really not working.

Switch

Yes tried the switch. Just clicks but nothing happens. But then I am not sure what is supposed to happen! Does it just pop up?

Colin

The switch should raise the rollbar in a couple of seconds (hydraulic). Sounds like you have a problem, and it's likely this is linked to your roof fault as two are interconnected.

Bill sorry to sound dumb, but I have only just got the car and not sure how things work.

You say hydraulic? So is there a pump and a fluid reservoir somewhere? Do hydraulics have anything to do with the roof?

Colin

Oh bugger! Where do I start?

Colin

So does that mean the roof comes up automatically when I press the switch? Or is that just lock / unlock?

The roof operates automatically when you hold the switch. It's a very complex system, and is linked to the rollbar and the windows ... those have to be in specific positions before the roof will operate. Lots of microswitches / sensors and a 'roof control module' that drives it all, IIRC the hydraulic reservoir is behind one of the trim panels in the boot.

To the OP: You've posted other faults with this car. May I ask how much did you pay for it? The reason I ask as that there's really no such thing as a cheap 129.

These cars have some very complex and expensive bits in them. From this and others posts you've made, I fear you may have bought a very expensive car.

Ian I fear you might be right! It is a '92, 91000 miles paint is good, trim is good, engine and box excellent, suspension steering and brakes excellent. Only problems are niggles! I gave £4k ish.

I do restore classic cars, so am reasonably practical! But I was trying to avaoid a car with lots of electronics!
