The oil seal on my 1998 (36,000 mile) R170 recently failed, flinging a mist of oil from the electromechanical clutch. Enquiries to my local main M-B dealer revealed that a replacement oil seal was not available and that a new blower would cost me £1850 plus fitting - say £2000-ish, all in. Ouch.
My local M-B independent specialist was, however, prepared to fit a new oil seal for me provided that I could locate an appropriate oil seal AND 110 mls of supercharger oil. He also suggested that it would be helpful if I could track down setup instructions for the Warner Unidamp electromechanical clutch.
The clutch instruction bit was easy - Warner publish a complete dismantling and set-up guide for the clutch, which I downloaded from their site. At 592K, the file is too large to attach here but I can email it to anybody who needs it.
The oil seal and blower oil were not so easy. Since the M62 Eaton blower is widely used by a number of manufacturers, I tried Mercedes, Jaguar, Toyota and General Motors agents for supercharger oil, without success - it just isn't stocked in the UK. In fact, Jaguar have recently withdrawn it from their spares catalogue.
A trawl of good old ebay identified a supplier in Georgia, USA who supplied me with both the oil seal and the oil at a very reasonable price. Bit of a ****-up with the US Sostal Service who lost the package for a couple of weeks (!) but the supplier was extremely helpful in tracking it down.
Bottom line: job done and it's a good 'un! A debt of gratitude to my local indy specialist for saving me a fortune. Cost me a bit over £300 and a bit of time searching the internet, but I have the satisfaction of knowing that I have avoided paying an exorbitant price to M-B for a new blower simply beacuase a £5 oil seal has failed and they refuse to supply replacements.
