on my e300 diesel 1996 210 there is a small diameter pipe that goes from the top of the reservoir to the top of the radiator the little pipe on the radiator has snapped off if i were to block this hole up in the radiator and blank the pipe off that comes from the reservoir what effect would this have on the cooling system what does this connection do get rid of air locks maybe your help would be appreciated

As you have suggested, you couldn't purge the air out of the radiator.

If you're insistent upon blocking the port in the top of the radiator, a better way to do it would be to remove the blanking plug just behind where the top hose stub comes out of the cylinder head, and replace it with a modified fitting which would connect with the purge line to the reservoir.

Me?, I would simply fit a new radiator, and be happy that a proper repair has been done - I don't like risking an expensive engine for the sake of a simple repair.

surely eventually the air would rise and purge itself

How.? The head of the radiator would be sealed.
