rain sensors or not

Really? That's ridiculous. Previous my Merc, I had several Peugeot 406 company cars and I really miss the auto wipers.

This is so true, my last car, a pug 406 had auto wipers and were fantastic. My 210 however annoys the life out of me as it never seems to stop. I believe it to be grease or something that is causing smearing on the glass that might be confusing the sensor, but it wont clean off  I've even resorted to meths to try and clear it off, plus new wiper blade, cleaner in washer bottle etc. Never known anything like it on any previous car

I like mine when its actually raining - they seem to get the speed just right to keep a clear view.

I don't like the way they are fooled by light coming through overhanging trees - always makes me jump when they sweep/squeek.

If the windscreen has ever been replaced (or the sensor) then it will need coding with Star diagnosis so it adapts for the windscreen properly ..

Had this issue in the A class - new windscreen, autoglass said it wouldnt need a new sensor, but it does (as the gel is no longer on it), put new sensor in it - worked pretty well, had it coded properly- works like a dream.

When it wasnt working I realised how much i like it .. same as auto lights !!

Rain Sensor issues,

I have a w211, all was working fine then I noticed my rain sensor was not cleaning the scrren properly, there was a delay in cleaning the rain on the screen, I had purchased new wipers from mercedes which really clean well, so i decided to do some trouble shooting,
I knew when driving through the tunnell the light came on all ok. I noticed the satnav is on auto setting for the brightness, when driving one day it became dim.
I removed the sensor and tried the wipers it works fine with 5 sec delay after each wipe on position 1.

So now removed the sensor cleaned the wind screen from out side, cleaned the lens from inside and gave the sensor a blow to remove any dust. I have put it back in and checking these days, but i think the rain sensor should kick in a 1 or 2 seconds early than normal, I can see there is enough rain on the windscreen before the sensor kicks in.
Please advise.

Thanks
Harry

A dealer (or I guess an indie with Star) can adjust the sensitivity of the sensor.

Having said that my wife has a Honda and the sensitivity is adjustable on the wiper stalk with 5 settings - yet none of them seem just right!

I too like them when it rains, along with the auto lights and dipping mirrors, its nice that the car is looking after things for me.

Like others though, I never remember to switch the wipers right off, and cringe when I switch on, and it sweeps a dirty or icy screen.

I'm a fan too...I think my 204 only swipes on start up if the screen is wet...

I just brough a e320cdi estate with rainsensor. the manual says the rainsensor only comes into play when the wiper s/w is in postion 1. But my wipers always gives a one whole swap whenever i switch in the ignition. The wiper always come on whenever there is rain even with the wiper switch in off postion( position 0). Do I have a faulty wiper switch?

Complete waste of time.....rain sensors drive me mad....they seem to have a life of their own!!
Agree, never bother using the feature, waste of time & wouldn't pay around£100 for this feature:(

hi i have a problem with my intermitant rain sensor setting... my rear wiper packed up altogether so i replaced it with a new one all fine now at the rear end BUT now when i put my front wiper on pos 1 it stays on exactly the same as pos 2 with no intermitant or rain sensitivity but before it worked perfect think it may have lost its coding can anyone advise .will it need putting on star diagnosis to re program it and is there anyone in the leicestershire area who can be recommended cheaply or anyone that could do it for me i dont want to be paying silly main dealer prices just for a simple code,
thanks.

ok update on my intermitant wiper problem i have now found another fault related to it,
ok sit in car bright morning have auto lights on start car auto light do not come on, put front wipers on position 1 they wipe constantly = no intermitant working, then after exactly 16 wipes it turns my auto lights on but wipers still wipe - turn off wipers and auto lights go out???
same if i go thro procedure again.

is this another problem or is it related to the intermitant wipe?
could it be the sensor at top of window is it 1 sensor that controls all?

anyway went down local merc dealers they want £80 just to put it on the star diagnosis before they even start searching for the fault,

any ideas before i decide what to do?

Really? That's ridiculous. Previous my Merc, I had several Peugeot 406 company cars and I really miss the auto wipers. However if they were left on, you had to turn them off then on again to restart them - they wouldn't wipe on startup (apart from wiping a dirty screen, you really wouldn't want them to try to start if the screen was iced up).

As far as them having a mind of their own, I recently drove an Accord, and that has the sensitivity adjustment on the wiper stalk. I *thought* it was a good idea, but it seemed impossible to get it right.
NO mine is a 2002 and if i leave them in auto they wipe once when you switch the ignition on wet or dry and if the windscreen is frozen its panic stations
