Ran out of diesel but the car started

Hello guys!
Yesterday on the way home I ran out of fuel on e280 cdi. The engine just halted. I went to the closest gas station and used a plastic bottle to fill ~1.4 liters of fuel. But I still couldn't start the bloody car. After that I towed the car to the same gas station and filled the tank. Tried to start the engine and in 10-20 seconds it actually did. I was able to get home. The only thing is that I have yellow 'check engine' light now on. How serious can that be? And shall I take a bus tomorrow to work?

It's an auto gearbox. Just have put it to neutral. The distance of towing was about few hundred meters. The rear wheels stayed on the road as well as the left front one
