This thread reminds me of my old 328i BM. There was rattles coming from underneath the car at various revs.
I took it into BMW (out of warranty), and they identified the fault straight away. "oh yes sir, that's the secondary covers on the CATS rattling, they all do that".
Ant the BMW authorised fix for this?
Jam a screw between the exhaust and the CAT cover.
Similar to my old Ford Cougar. The revs would climb by themselves. The fix - to buy a 35p rubber washer from B and Q and plug it into an air hose to reduce the flow. If only all fixes were that simple.
Mb tech here so when I say A and b class have had lots of different rattles and noises from belt areas with several causes and remedies there are quite a few ranging from modified belt, ac pulley, shims on alternator. Any mb tech should be able to sort belt noises on a or b class as there are lots of mb tips documents on the detailing noises and required fixes. Sounds like shot dealer to me as from your original write up I'd be saying it was on the belt and also the other guys complaining of noises I'd say it's on the auxiliary belt aswel.
