rattles on start up

helpful advice

dont be too scared by some of the replies you have had , your engine is a 111 type it has a varible camshaft adjusting mechanisim on 1 camshaft . it isnt un common to have a slight rattle at start up after changing the oil. This is a charatisic of this engine type. it rattles due to the mechanisim draining itself after the car has been running and then stood overnight etc. , you could have it replaced but there is no guarantee this would be better . my advice keep an eye on it and if it becomes louder or more often take it to a qualified MB technician if you require any futher info try this e-mail link [email protected] , good luck

just an update on the rattling on start up the car is booked in for a looking over thursday in a different gaage they seem ok there going to do a full check for free so fingers crossed

Is there any chance to be the automatic inside / outside air flap , have something broken?

It always does a full movement when you 1st start the engine.

It did the same noise in a Fiat Punto and a CLK of a friend.

How did you get on with this?

I have an SLK200K - also the 111 engine I think...

It rattles for a few seconds after starting, then sounds normal. - but the noise only happnes if it has been left for a few days then started - start it every day and perfectly normal...

Some posts on this forum seem to suggest timing chain tensioner bleed of..

local garages dont seem to want to touch this - and I dont want to have to pay merc prices - but I guess my only choice is to take it to them and see what they say....

Just wondered what the outcome of yours was..

rattles on stat up

hi there my car got a good look over yesterday by local mechanic, i told him about rattles on start up and i left him with the car when i went back to him he said the cars great and that the rattle is just the oil from the bottom of engine making its way back up and that its like that on most mercs while i was there i seen another bloke pull up in his merc a w124 model and i asked him does he get the rattles on start up on his car and he said yes,then he said im not worried about it ill worry about it when its a constant rattle so so far ive talked to a few people in the car business and they have all assured me that its nothing to worry about i have the car booked in for a full service and diagnostics next week just to make sue everything is ok ill keep yous up to date

I tried to record mine so that people could understand what we are talking about... Of course when I set everything up to record.. it didnt do it!

Is this like the noise you get?

rattling

hi there had a listen t the link you had on your post and mine isnt that bad mine only last a second or two and its not thay noisey so far from everyone i spoke too are all saying its just the oil coming back up after the oil droping down the bottom of the engine overnight even the mechanics i brought the car too said the same thing i have the car booked in for service all the oils are geting changed to ill keep you posted
