Rattly Catalyst- dangerous to engine?

Alps,

Did you go for a new exhuast from the above, if you did, how much did you pay in the end and who was your contact there?

cheers,

Alan

Alan,

I saw Ian Reeve, the manager there, Their high flow CATS are the best, £400 each (not £800 as previously quoted), the custom front end of the exhaust cost about £500.

depends how bad it is, but I fixed the rattling cat on my vectra sri with a couple of self tapping screws. lasted ages, until my car got rear ended on the m8. cat was still okay but the car was scrap.

quoted £943.41 for MB for a cat 2024902320.
they must think i am insane

Is the cat not supposed to crackle a bit when working properly, like after the car is switched off and under heavy acceleration?

Help my cat rattles as hell.Any long term problems?
My understanding is that once it rattles, it starts to break up, and there is a risk that debris can be sucked back into the engine.

I'm someone more knowledgable will be able to confirm or deny that I made it up though. :D

On the V6 you have 4 cats 2 upper and 2 lower,it is always the lower ones that go noisy. There is no danger of bits getting into the engine. This is an interesting point, if you take a piece of the ceramic cat,it like a honeycombe and rubbing a piece between you finger it goes into a powder.

I have my doubts even if it could get into the engine if it would do any harm.

From all of my searches when my own went 2 years back, the Cat manufactures seem to be the ones putting scary stories.

I and many others have taken out the lower cats and closed the boxes up again and passed the MOT with no problems.
Those that have used other makes do say that the sound is not the same.
At £1450 for the pair, that is a hefty amount to pay out, and is a bit of a joke
There are firms like BM and others that do make good Cats, I do have a trade list somewhere

In the last year we have seen two V6 engine failures caused by cats breaking up.material gets sucked back into the cylinders and wears / scores the bores and damaged the piston rings

If you are doing it I cant argue with that, at what point in the engine cycle does the exhaust gases get sucked back into the engine.

As it is the lower CATs that always fail how does the debris get back through the first cat and into the engine
