We all know this is illegal, right? A lenient officer might only give a VDRS but it's possible to get up to £1,000 fine and the plate taken off you.

On the websites where you order plates, do they make it plainly obvious that anything 'non-standard' is illegal before you press the order button?

As far as I know unless you specify differently the plates will be manufactured to legal spacing.

Then they will pass the onus onto you because you've requested illegal spacing.

I imagine they would be making it clear that it would be a "Show plate" only and legal for public highway use.

I would have thought it was a legal requirement for them to make this clear. Or at least in their interest to avoid possibly legal comebacks.

Well some sights will say they only sell legal plates,if you us one of them the web site will not allow you to make a illegal plate, others sites will,my plate is the right size the letters are the correct size the only thing that is wrong is the gap between the first letter and the rest is bigger it spells my intial and my complete name, the most likely place to get a pull is when you are parked, had to have two coffees in a McDonalds until the police got a more urgent call and pushed off,it makes you wonder about them they have grabbed a meal and still want to book somebody.

I forgot you will need a legal plate for your MOT they will if nasty fail the car.

Are you going to keep us guessing or tell us what you've got in mind? :dk:

I'm after a definitive answer - has anyone actually ordered a "show" plate and seen / not seen some kind of disclaimer that you have to agree to??

Nothing in mind Ant - just in my time as a copper I never knew if there was an answer to "I never knew mate".

Get yourself on eBay and have a go. £20 a pair.

Then you'll know for sure. :thumb:

The only disclaimer I've ever seen is from sellers stating it's not road legal or for show only. What you do with it is up to you after that, but you don't have to sign anything.

Every show plate i have bought (not for road use obviously) has had a notice bonded on the back of the plate saying that it's a show plate and not for road use.
The last one i bought had a flyer with it stating that it was illegal to use the plate on the road.

For the number plate to be technically legal they have to show the makers name and postcode so that if the plate is mis-spaced or the font is not correct they can have their license revoked and be fined. Most garages tend to put their names ( you can't miss it) in the bottom centre of the plate. I usually get my plates made up at Halfords , a bit expensive , but you can't really see their name and postcode as it's again in the bottom middle of the plate but as a hologram , you really have to look closely to see it.

The BS rule no longer applies although most police think it does. It was deemed anti competitive to suppliers in the EU outside of the UK. All of my plates are legal and none carry the BS markings as they come from southern Ireland. You wont/can't get prosecuted for not having the BS symbol if the rest of the plate complies.

It's the incredibly annoying and narcissistic re-spacing of letters that annoys the hell out of me. I didn't manage to catch anyone with that specific offence but I dished out plenty of other motoring tickets :) Worst was 'Parking on the offside at night' :)

I've changed my original post as above, brain wasn't engaged.

I assume that any illegal plate won't have the makers name & postcode on it.

Mine don't I have 2 sets of plates legal ones that read V121 ANF which show the manufacturer's name and postcode. And a set of show plates Mis spaced but legal font to read V12 IAN F both from the same supplier. Never had a sticker or flyer with the show plates though that stated off road use only

Sorry, but not clear in your reply, do your showplates have a maker & postcode on them?
