Got back from Olly's on Thursday about 13.00.

Anna went to get in the car around 18.00 and noticed the door mirror glass was peculiar, it had gone opaque, called me to see if i had noticed it before, it was fine on the way back from Olly's.

I had never seen that before, she got back about an hour later and called me again, asked me to sit in the car and look at the rear view mirror. Exactly the same the glass was opaque. She said it was fine and when she had got in the car to come home it had gone opaque.

I phoned Olly, he said he door mirror glass was not unusual but had never heard of the rear view mirror glass go. He did say that i should sit down when i enquired about the cost of a new door mirror glass £ 312.00 + vat
and £ 292.00 + vat for the rear view mirror.

I also asked my friendly Brooklands man if he had heard of rear view glass going before, he hadn't either.

Has anyone on the Forum heard, it just seems to much of a coincidence for both glasses to go at the same time.

What a very expensive couple of weeks. While i was at Olly's i also asked him to check the battery as it has gone flat a few times. I put it down to the very cold weather and only doing very short journey's, it turned out to be showing only 68% capacity. So while i was down at Brooklands they put a new battery in, the good thing i did manage a 20% discount.

Sorry to hear about the troubles with the mirrors :(

Certainly does seem strange.

Hope you get them sorted.. which by the sounds of it, means buying new ones

When you say the glass has gone opaque do you mean frosted or milky looking? Or a dark colour, as if dimmed? It does seem very strange they should both go virtually at the same time. Could there be some electrical issue? Electricity being the only common thing linking them.

A dark mottled colour, similar to an antique mirror.

I though it might be something like a power surge, asked Olly he didn't think so.

???

If we see each other tomorrow you can have a look.

Mm. Just too much of a coincidence to have both go.

Sounds more like the light sensor has gone and is dimming the mirrors all the time. Easy fix for any electronics expert.

Would that fault come up on the Star machine ?

It should but thinking about it wouldn't both mirrors have gone simultaneously if it were the sensor? And I guess they should clear once IGN is off or reverse selected?
Unless there is some sort of permanent live 'short' keeping them dimmed?

Will be interesting to see what STAR reports?

I will let you know if the Star comes up with anything.

I have just taken delivery of a lovely 2004 CLK 200K (one of the very first facelift models) which has the same fault on the driver's door mirror. It's a darker brown shade all of the time although the internal mirror is fine.

I've just bought a used door mirror glass from a breaker's on Ebay (£50 instead of £300 for a new one).

How easy are these to fit and how do you do it?
