You need to remove the trim around the COMAND system, this involves removing the ashtray, gear surround and centre airvents. The COMAND unit itself is held in with Torx screws.
See this document for full details. Just a note, the centre grille can be a complete pain to get out!
The small tabs that hold the air vents in place can break easily.
the air vents come out by loosening the two torx screws inside on each side. Then at the top of the inside of the air vents, carefully loosen the clips and 'wiggle' the vents and their surround out.
Remove the gear knob followed by the surround of the gear knob. the surround pulls up from the front and comes out quite easily. Then remove the ash tray by carefully prising the catches away at the base. This reveals the underside of the trim around the comand. Unclip the bottom of the surround. disconnect the climate/A/C control wires. do not disconnest the SRS/ hazard wiring as you will most likely cause a fault to be displayed in the dash. this reveals the comand screws. Remove these and disconnect the wires. Hey presto its out. Reassembly is the reverse of disassmbly.

Absolutely, take your time doing this bit, it's very easy to break the vents. Even with the instructions I've provided the link to it's a bit of a nightmare the first time.

hope this helps,
Yep, disconneting the switch panel containing the hazard switch causes an Airbag failure message to appear. Luckily when I did this reconnecting the switch and acknowledging the error cleared the fault.
Excellent. You should have enough information to do this then. One thought, could it work from the AUX socket (if it's factory fit COMAND, you should have an AUX socket in your glovebox).
Any idea if the Revo will fit in the ashtray? Or do you have somewhere else in mind?
