Two of my locking wheel nuts proved impossible to get off when i was getting some new tyres fitted. So this mechanic just takes some sort of metal chisel, whacks the nut a few times - chooses a socket of a certain size - whacks it onto the wheel nut and a few seconds later - out it comes.

Now having seen this trick performed really quickly - under 1 minute for each wheel without breaking into a sweat - I am wondering what the point of these special locking nuts really is? They might deter a casual encounter but if someone knows what they are doing then they seem pretty useless. I am beginning to think the best defence is that my alloys are not in good cosmetic condition rather than the locking wheel nuts.

The 2 sport contact 3's cost me £157 each fitted and balanced. They were 225/45 R17. And a few quid to the carribbean gentleman (who goes by the moniker Voodoo Bou Bou)who extracted the locking wheel nuts.

Just my 2c to help others who may be faced with this situation.

It's called a Lancashire Spanner, where I come from
