Hi guys,
Just getting things done to my CLK in the time off i have, as I only got it in the weekend.
Quick question which I'm sure many of you will know the answer to.
Are there special keys or prongs i have to use to remove the original mercedes head unit?
And will my Alpine slot in there?
Let me know please.
Thanks

You can get the keys from the stealership parts dept, they are about a pound or something to buy.

Which headunit is it? I'm not certain but I think it may be the same keys for every headunit regardless.

I believe the same keys are used for all OEM MBs - they are Becker keys if you have any lying around. If not, you're local dealer should have them for pennies.

Forgot to add that Halfords can remove your headunit for you if you claim to be buying a new one, just stand in the ICE section scratching your head and a pleasant sales assistant will appear to help you. Try saying that you think there may be some extra cables and you need to check.

Once they've whipped your headunit out, explain that you'll meet them inside and as soon as their back is turned, BURN RUBBER! ;)

I've only done this once...

EDIT: keys for comand here, may be the same for others: http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/showpost.php?p=170743&postcount=3

Couple of guy's near here can whip it out for you them in seconds flat :D:devil:

Any standard sized head unit will fit. Just be sure to remove the old cage and install the new one. As for connectors both the stock and all of todays head units use ISO connectors so wiring should be just plug and play.

By the way have a look at the new 2008 Alpine head unit models.

Or just pop in to your local dealer they will remove for youfor free, well mine did!!!!

Yes and Yes.

Pop down to Woking one lunchtime and I'll pop it out for free for you!

On the W203 you have to strip the front panel down to remove the radio/cd player. Have checked with previous threads as i tried to remove mine with keys.

Thanks guys, a mate of mine said there are 4 holes which you can insert alankeys into and they pull out.
I have a W208 so it shouldn't be too hard.
It is an avantgarde, does any one recommend upgrading speakers to component level.
Or shall i just see how my alpine goes with the original speakers?
I currently have an Alpine CDA - 9833R.
Served me well in my last car; haven't really thought about changing it TBH.

I'm afraid your mate isnt correct.

The standard W208 stereo head unit is removed with two flat keys. These each slide into the uniton the lower left and right edges.

I'm a complete idiot

I've just bought a set of keys off Ebay twice  so if you want I can post you the spare set free of charge and you can just post them back when finished.

In fact they could always become the MBclub forum raido keys, free to anyone to use as long as you post them back...it'll cost you 32p though!

I've got 1990 230te with what looks like the original Becker radio, the manual says it's a Grand Prix 1300. The questions are how do I remove it? Is there a wiring connection kit I need as I have a Sony head unit coming. Also do I have to do anything special with the wiring regarding the electric aerial.

I'm in Woking by the way!

Does it have the two small slots in it to insert the keys? Can you post up here a picture of it? I carry the keys with me most of the time, including today;)
