Hi

i have a small chip on the wooden panel just above where the ignition key is. How easy is it to remove the wood panels from the dashboard itself? i assume they are screwed on from behind - how do you get to the nuts?

thanks

Derek

Derek , it is a bit of a fiddle - I did it when I broke my 300-24 for parts .

The wood is held in from behind by plastic nuts , which require IIRC an 8mm socket to undo . You either need to slip the instruments out , or get access from below the dash . I think I may have taken out the glovebox to access the other end .

Sorry , it has been so long , I can't remember exactly how many fixings or where they are .

I gave all the wood out of mine to my pal James as he had a 124 at the time - he might still have it ? Mine was burr walnut and in perfect condition . I can ask if you need a replacement piece ?

Hi Derek,

i already have the parts.... actually had them for nearly 2 years, but havnt got round to fitting as i assumed (correctly by the sound of things), its a hassle.

I can see from the rear of the new wood i have the amount of screws it has....

I'm trying to clear out all the rubbish in my house so need to either fit these or sell them. Sounds like its too much of a hassle then. the small mark on the wood panel is near the key and can hardly be seen so i'll probably just leave it and sell the wood. incidently, its on ebay now but thought i'd double check before someone clicks buy it now....

i have the airbag on the passenger side so probably more hassle to remove aswell.....

cheers

Derek

I remember doing that when I replaced the heater matrix on my 190E - full dash out and back in - in a day !

The matrix had been leaking and used to steam up the window - so there was no choice : it had to be done .

I took my bits of wood out of the 124 without removing the dash , and without damaging anything . Graeme's link reminded me that I took the centre vent out .

Just took the wood out of the 420SE I'm breaking - 126 wood is a dawdle to remove , although most people seem to think it is a big job - the long piece along the dash can be removed safely in 5 minutes .

I think it sounds like a bigger job than in actually is...having said though I'm not sure I would attempt it!
