Hi all.
Planning on upgrading my crappy speakers in the Audio 20 system in my 2016 E 220. Finding tweeters that'll fit nicely in the original position seems challenging, so I'm wondering if anyone knows if the tweeters in the W213 (and/or W205 etc.) cars have the same fittings? That would simplify finding tweeters and adapter fittings dramatically.
Thanks!

3D rotating tweeters ?
Nah, not those.

It's just that every aftermarket tweeter supposed to fit in an E-class is for the 213 and 205. Can't find anything specified for the 212, but if the normal tweeters from the 213 fits in the 212, then the aftermarket ones will fit too.

I'll see if I can get a cheap pair of 213 tweeters from a scrapyard to see if they'll fit. Then I'll know.

This is my first Mercedes ever. Been a Volvo (and before that Saab) guy for ages, but been aching for a Benz a couple of years. Very happy with the car, but the sound needs improvement. Planning on doing front doors first, and maybe rear doors later.

I've never been a connoisseur of sound systems buI do note the difference in our children's cars as all of them have cars with what are called "premium systems. Even both of our 65 sony tv have modern/slim sound systems via recommendations of our children but these sytems are good but not what some go for, costing thousands.

I can relate to your woes as in 2016 I bought a new gle/amg-line - great car and one of our son's did his best to encourage me to go for MB's stanrd top sytem, inc pano roof and side-steps IIRC and I'd only have to pay IIRC over 2.5k and sub 3k but it was the waiting list for the car that would have added 8 more weeks and i could not wait as the three months was long enough. The cars great but even to me, the sound sytme is crap unless, on the odd ocassion play a cd, the sound sytem improves vastly.

If I change my car again and thats a big if as I have several hospital appts a year - I would make sure it was a MB/GLE/GLS with their premium sound sytem and pano roof

I have a 1998 Volvo S70 in my garage, with the Dolby Pro Logic Surround system. It's by far the best sounding factory fitted sound system I've ever heard, developed by Dynaudio and Alpine.

New cars have all the gadgets and features, but rarely good sound. A friend of mine drives a 2016 S212 with the H/K system, and while it's superior to the Audio 20 in my car, it's not good compared to my old S70. It lacks warmth and depth. My father drives a 2017 Volvo V60CC with that models top of the line H/K surround system, and it sounds awful. He doesn't care, he's well into his 70's, but I've driven that car a lot and the sound is just bad. It seems that car manufacturers cheap out on speakers, they simply don't wanna pay for quality hardware.

Don't feel singled out i have just just collected (4 week's) a C63s cabriolet with the "mid" system fitted and it sounds as dead as a door nail! even worse top down! but after some research she is booked in with comandonline on Tuesday for a well recommended speaker upgrade so watch this space, i will report back my finding's.

Thanks Tony.

I found really cheap original H/K tweeters from RRR.LT, so ordered them figuring they gotta be better than my crappy ones. What's your opinion about the H/K speakers? There are quite a few midrange/midbass woofers too, or should I go with brand new aftermarket ones?

Think Comand at Lightwater used to suggest Morel speakers as an upgrade, be interesting to hear what they use now.

Got these from Latvia today.

I'll swap these into the car today, hopefully they are way better than the basic ones. But there are more goodies waiting in my garage, a complete speaker kit (Onkyo P-S625C2) to be installed once all the sound deadening material I ordered arrives.

The tweeters are installed, and they're way better than the old ones. It's actually possible to hear all sorts of instruments in my music now!

Did some work on the driver's side door (left, this is Sweden after all) today too. Drilled out the rivets holding the woofer, installed rivnuts instead along with some deadening butyl mat. Next job is to do the same in the other front door and install the new Onkyo kit speakers.

Hi there

I'm thinking of doing the same thing on my E class coupe 2010 with the audio 20 system, I have an aftermarket android system which did improve the sound (in comparison to a carplay module which was installed previously to the factory screen) but thinking of upgrading the tweeters to the HK ones as you did, would you say it's worth it and assuming they're plug and play?

cheers...

The H/K tweeters are indeed plug and play, easy to swap. And they are also much better than the crappy ones in the Audio 20 system, the €20 I payed for them with shipping was absolutely worth it! I say go for it.

I have mine back now and Wow, Now i am no speaker expert but i think the install in mine consisted of removing 6" footwell woofers and replacing with 8" BLAM woofers and the door mid's and tweeters were also were changed for BLAM along with the dash speaker, adding sound deadening where required and the difference is night and day the new set up adds sounds previously unheard and it just gives the impression it is not even trying. Do it.

Thanks Tony.

I guess this thread could be renamed "Replace all door speakers" instead, because that's the road I'm heading down now.

Had a somewhat difficult afternoon today replacing the front left woofer with the Onkyo 6.5". The crossover is big enough to give me way too much trouble fitting it in the door. After much trial and error along with some cursing I decided to let it be for now, just going with the H/K tweeters and the Onkyo woofers. Will probably find a place for the crossovers eventually. The Onkyo tweeters are a bit too big to fit in the sail panels fittings, soon I'll buy a another set of them at the breaker for modification for the tweeters.

In my case (2010 212) they did Morel coaxes in the the doors (+ two layers of Dynamat) and Morel tweeters in the dash. They also hid a 10 inch sub in the boot. It made a huge difference. It's great to have decent audio in a car if that sort of thing matters to you.

Passenger side door done today, totally without problems. Sound is immensely better now, and the woofers are still brand new, they'll be even better after enough hours of music.

Will replace the tweeters too in due time, as soon as set of smaller crossovers and a pair of used sail panels arrive next week. The H/K tweeters are fine but I prefer a litte warmer sound, and from what I could hear in the shop demo rack the Onkyo tweeters will give me exactly that.
