remove the emergency key part,
insert the top (left branch) of the key (the key when removed lookes like a T with the right branch removed)
You will see a little gray tab with an arrow pointing towards the middle of the hole
Slide the tab across and the black platic part of the key detaches from the metal part
it can be stiff
Thanks for this and sorry for being vague before, but I am trying to open the whole of the fob so I can replace my old one, which is in a state, with a replacement. Any ideas?

Hi Martin, why don't you give youtube a go. I noticed before that they had clips on it, on how to change batterys on merc keys. There might be something usefull there.
I did this a while ago, You cant swap old style for new chrome its a different shape. Get a replacement from ebay that is in good nick and just replace the innards. When you have the batteries out look into the end of the fob and you will see a white piece of plastic with a small rectangular hole in it. Slip a longish map pin or very thin blade between the white plastic and the fob case just so there is about a 1 mil gap between them. Get a paper clip and bend about 2mm at a right angle so you can use it as a hook poke it gently through the hole dont go in too far about 5mm and hook the white plastic and pull, It should come out quite easily. If you pull too hard and break it you can look forward to a nice new shiny chrome one
I was able to convert the old plastic style to the new chrome style by swapping the operating IC on the PCB inside the fob. Need to do some precision unsoldering and resoldering.
