Reprogramming key/alarm transmitter

GRAV888 said:
Fitted the new batteries, (after having a look inside at the circuit board:eek: ), pointed it at car and it opened the doors.:bannana:
Put key into ignition and it started no problems:bannana: , so I would definately say that keys have to be programmed for each car and they will not lose their memory. (Well, not between 6 and 7 months anyway)

But that was the original key, right? Did you buy a replacement from a stealership when this one was involuntarily baptised?

Nope. I had a spare.
I've just tried my wifes key (same style) and it doesn't do anything to mine at all.
Yes, it goes in the ignition slot, but that's it.
When I put mine in, you hear the mechanism unlock.

I don't think your listening. Grav, me you or anyone else cannot order a 'blank'! We can only order a key for our own car so it will\should work.

Unless you know different?

On the circuit board, there it the infra red transmitter and a load of chips.
A new key would look identical inside, but it would definitely HAVE to be coded.
Buying one from fleabay is just a waste of money imho

If we could, surely we would all be car thieves, exporting MB's all the time and living the high-life.
IIRC, you have to show the logbook (V5c) for the car and at least 1 other form of ID (photo) when you order a key

You can take it into your dealership with the car and they will code it for you. However, you may have to prove the car is yours!

Sorry if I was mis-leading with the key, but I was refering to your earlier post about the memory:

Interesting. It depends how the programming is stored. If it's in volatile memory then taking the battery out might return it to blank mode. Has anyone had to replace the battery in their key? Do you have to re-program it?

The key holds no memory, therfore it must be programmed.
My doors even opened the way I last set the key up, ie: drivers door only on 1st press, then the others on the 2nd press.

Crikey Alfie... That's news to me. Are you talking about the face lift 210?

It cannot be that easy to clone a key fob if at all possible, otherwise my insurance would not put the car in a catagory 1 bracket (most secure):bannana: MB would not say a new key has to come from germany, they would take one off the shelf a program it while you wait, as for memory, my spare key, the flat thing with no remote facilities has no batteries and its memory has lasted over six years now.

Just face it, stick yer hands in yer pockets and shell out £150 nicker to the stealerships, like I had to

While it's not possible to buy a "blank" key, it is possible to have a key from another mercedes programmed to work with your car. I had a key from a friend's W210, same model year as mine, and I wanted to do exactly this to have another spare key. I thought it would be cheaper to do if I actually had a physical key.

Unfortunately, the cost of doing this (at the dealership of course) is only a few pence cheaper than buying a "new" key from them. Comes to something like £160 either way. I decided against :-)

Better to have the warranty on it too;)

Hi Simon,
Could you state the model year of your 210 please?

If this is a facelift 210, are you saying you could take any facelift 210 key to a dealer and simply ask them to reprogram it to start a different facelift 210?

I am querying this for a number of reasons one being that spare keys for this model have NEVER been held at a dealership!!!

Hi John,

As my footer says, I have a 2000/W Mercedes E320 CDI Elegance. Yes it's a facelift, and yes I was told at the dealer that they would be happy to program the key for my car, for a "nominal" fee, but that there was no point whatsoever doing it though, since it was literally a few pence cheaper than ordering a new key, and wouldn't I prefer a nice new shiny key. I didn't really need another spare - it was more that since my friend's car had been written off, he didn't really need his any more! I didn't want to pay £160 so I politely declined ;-)

So what's the difference between a facelift key and a pre-facelift key? (I am talking about W210)

95-97 the keys were flip-style, I think 98 onwards they were new style. "Facelift" has nothing to do with it.

Hi Shude,
Thanks for that.

I hope my reply explained my use of the wording. I would quite rightly have been criticsed if I had said ALL E-class! Thank goodness I avoided that trap and your post has clarified when the change was made.

The 210 was a flagship in many respects and as such had a lot of updates during it's lifetime, I think the first major updates were done in 1997-98 like the W202 so it got the new keys, alarm and probably loads of other bits, including the new NEV-R-RUST metal preparation process! ;)

I bought a replacement for my c230k yr 2000, this has the later type plastic key fob with a slide in door key,( i think this is for cars with DAS security fitted) only thing was they only supply a newer design, so the old slide in key doesn't fit, the new fobs are supplied by milton keynes and programmed for the car, the metal slide in has to be ordered separately from germany, so be warned if you have an early style later type key fob, to order a new slide in key aswell. my new fob came ready to use with no setting up required.

Yes, same here. I ordered the key blade/slide too, it arrived about a week later and was about £9.
