Respray old rusty bonnet - or a new one and spray?

Hi,

Hoping for your opinion on what you'd do, and also any idea on costs.

Well my bonnet is peppered in small rust chips, all of which have formed dots of rust. In particular the section that meets the front bumper, under the front grill, has rusted more considerably. Also the underside of the bonet is showing signs of rust.

For these reasons i thought instead of asking a bodyshop to treat and respray the current rusty bonnet, it may be better for longevity to get a new bonnet and get the whole thing sprayed. Thoughts?

Also is there anything that can be done when respraying to strengthen the paint, extra layers of laquer? Waxoyl the underside - would that actually be worthwhile?

Will be talking to Ital Coachworks and Sira Motors for quotes.

Here are some pics of the bonnet

It is like the above all over the front of the bonnet.

and the underside...

Thanks
Ross

Im sure a new bonnet will not be cheap..

I would simply have it stripped back and repainted... im sure the wings will have to be done too..

Then pump lots of clear waxoyl in all the cavities...

As ^ a new bonnet will cost but see maybe you find a rustfree from breakers but if not make sure is done properly.

Was hoping a bonnet would cost £150 + fitting for a new one. Unsure of costs of paint. Yes, i imagine top of wings would need to be done.

I'm worried that stripping back will only see the rust return eventually from the inside out.

I also have 4 arches that need doing, which i plan to do myself.

£491.95 + vat from the dealer.

You could get a pattern part but i wouldnt recommend it with a bonnet. Not only will it rust quicker & not fit properly, its a safety issue.

just get the bodyshop to give it a good rub down before spraying, i wouldnt bother with a new bonnet. tell them you want inside as well as outside sprayed.

Not too sure, Dronsfields arent a dealer, they are a breaker that also does new parts.. you would need to ask them.

It would require carefull grit blasting for the affected area's sanding is not much use, from the pictures you have supplied with a wax rust treatment afterwards should last well.
It has classic MB corrosion from the inside out underneath, the paint finish has failed particularly at the edges which should be enveloped entirely when the car was made, the top ones are corroded stone chips which if spotted early could have been treated,
they have rusted to easily again due to poor quality workmanship during the manufacturing.
